I bought this LP new between late 1966 and early 1967.


Cover - About 1/2 of shrink still on.  I taped some of the torn shrink some 55 or so years ago.  Some tape residue is only on shrink (different pix with shrink laying flat, and folded back to see the clear cover).  But on the back cover there is tape residue on the cover as well.  No writing, no cardboard splits.  Corner bumps and a few perimeter dings.  On the back cover, bottom right, a 4 indicates the cover was printed by the Imperial Packing Co, Inc, Indianapolis IN.


Vinyl - Some smudging, some light marks.  There are a few tics toward the end of Desolation Row, but they are the only ones I hear.  Two-eye labels, “NONBREAKABLE” to left of spindle hole.


Sleeve - Clear plastic.

Type “highway 61 revisited mono searchingforagem” into your browser and click on the searching for a gem site.  Be awash in details.  For instance:

In the liner notes on the back cover, 2nd column, go up three lines from the paragraph that ends with “& the holy slow train”.  The word “meaningless” was actually “meaningful” on the promo and first commercial copies.  So my cover is not a first issue.


Information I gleaned from analogplanet about Columbia’s deadwax etchings tells us that the 1C on side 1 verifies it was stamped from the original tape and first group of masters/lacquers.  The 1G on side 2 verifies it was stamped from the second group of masters/lacquers but still from the original tape.


So because of when I bought it and these details my copy is not what is generally accepted as a first pressing.  But it’s early in the life of this LP.


This album is a Rock ’n’ Roll Rocket.  From A Buick Six and Tombstone Blues rank with stuff Iggy and the guys did 4 years later.  Mike Bloomfield is plain perfect all through this album.  Bob’s vocals and, of course, lyrics overwhelm.
