Tosun Yusuf Mehmet Barış Manço was bornOn 2nd January 1943 in Üsküdar, Istanbul, Turkey. He formed HIS Firstband at school (KAFADARLAR (The Buddies)), but it was withHIS nextband HARMONILER (The HARMONIES), that he started recording cover versions. Upon leaving school he moved To Europe, forming different bands and recording songs in English, French and Turkish while touring A great deal.
In 1970, he formed Barış Manço Ve... (BARIŞ Manço AND ...) and RecordedHISFirst hit single, ''DAĞLAR DAĞLAR'' (''Mountains ,Mountains !''), selling over 700,000Copies . After this success he Recorded A coupleof singles withMOĞOLLAR (The MONGOLS), before returningTo Turkey. It was back at Home that HIS early works were brought together and released as the album 'DÜNDEN BUGÜNE'.
In 1972, he formed KURTALAN EKSPRES, with whom he would work FOR The restofHIS career, and then concentratedOn singles untilHIS debut non-compilation album '2023' was released in 1975. The following year he released ' BARIS MANCHO' (an anglicized version ofHIS own name) in an attemptTo gain international success, and although it didn't achieve what he expected it did topThe charts in both Romania and Morocco. It was later released in Turkey as 'NICK The CHOPPER'. He continued recording and performing with KURTALAN EKSPRES and then in 1988 also started directing and presenting The TV show ''7'DEN 77'YE'' ('' From AGE 7To 77''). This was A combined MUSIC , talk show and documentary program and wasA real successFORThe 8 years it ranOn Turkish National TV.
On 31st January 1999, Barış died FromA heart attack just beforeThe releaseof 'MANÇOLOJI' ('MANÇOLOGY' or 'MANCHOLOGY'), which wasA double album containing re-recordingsof manyof HIS hitsTo celebrate nearly 40 yearsof being involved inMUSIC .
