CONDITION
VINYL : Terrific / a thick piece here at 140+ grams / top quality and deep grooved / glossy throughout / a couple of very light marks only / plays through a treat with no skips or nasty surprises / no lead in-out noise and perhaps one or two barely noticeable pops / a clear and rich sound with no background noise between tracks either / an excellent example for a 1st pressing / rated better than EXLABELS : Both labels are clean / no writing or tears etc
SLEEVE : Superb / thick American style cardboard cover with original Atlantic inner bag / extensive liner notes on back by M artin Williams / glossy laminated colour photo front cover with a touch of fading on 'stereo' imprint at left on front which was stamped over the top of the laminate originally / no writing or splits / the corners are square and the spine intact / some light age-wear marks on the back consistent with shelf-wear for white non-laminated sleeves / very presentable and certain to please
DESCRIPTION
An incredibly rare 1st US Stereo pressing of this sought after original 1957 jazz album from Blakey's Jazz Messengers joined here by Thelonious Monk resulting in a sound reminiscent of a friendly (and swingin') get-together of old buddies.This is the original lime-green Atlantic stereo label with black print ; a deep-groove pressing and many times rarer than it’s Mono counterpart.
The line-up here is Art Blakey (drums) ; Thelonious Monk (piano) ; Johnny Griffin (tenor sax) ; Bill Hardman (trumpet) and Spanky DeBrest (bass).
Unlike many meetings between jazz giants, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk is not a disappointment. While the first side comes off sounding simply like another Monk LP, most notably "Blue Monk", side 2 contains some fabulous collaboration. Strange to think that of all the great tenor sax players that played with Monk in the 50's (Sonny Rollins, Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, etc.) it is perhaps Johnny Griffin that comes off sounding like the best fit. Griffin blazes through Monk's compositions in startling contrast to the pianst's swooning, off-kilter style. When Monk uses space and restraint, Griffin uses pure speed, blowing with total abandon, yet shocking precision….outstanding sax!

In the late spring of 1957, Thelonious Monk was invited to join Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers for an album largely of his compositions-- it was a productive time for Monk, a month after a guest spot with Sonny Rollins and the solo piano recording "Thelonious Himself" and a month before the sessions that would yield "Monk's Music". Blakey, for his part, was an established leader by this point, his Jazz Messengers revitalizing the New York bop scene and maintaining a busy recording schedule as a sideman, including sessions with Monk under the leadership of the pianist, Miles Davis, Gigi Gryce and Sonny Rollins. With Monk sitting at the piano chair in place of Sam Dockery, Blakey and the Messengers (tenorman Johnny Griffin, trumpeter Bill Hardman and bassist Spanky DeBrest), an extra layer of tension would be added to the Jazz Messengers' sound.Infusing Monk's music with a healthy dose of hardbop has an odd effect-- with the Jazz Messengers' proclivity towards blues and gospel sounds readily apparent, Monk sometimes sounds oddly out of place on his own compositions though as Griffin rails away in exploratory fashion, Monk seems inclined to hold the theme close in his accompaniment.
Opener "Evidence" bristles with energy and sounding pretty avant garde for the day (1957). "I Mean You" evokes gospel and stride traditions in a way quite unlike anything else. “In Walked Bud” shows all involved seemingly having a great time, with some truly great solos from Monk and Jimmy Griffin on tenor sax. An awesome blues number ("Purple Shades") composed by Johnny Griffin is a great close to a wholly enjoyable album.
Lots of fun, with plenty of swing... and Monk.
