Nothing if not versatile, Arthur Lee began his career in the pre-Beatles novelty-hit era playing surf music, Booker T. - style organ workouts, dance numbers ('do the Slow Jerk, baby!'), soul ballads, the lot. And then, in late 1965, The Grass Roots — Lee's folk-rock band - evolved into Love, as Lee and guitarist John Echols were joined by ex-Surfaris bassist Ken Forssi, Alban 'Snoopy' Pfisterer on drums and, most significantly, ex-Byrds roadie Bryan Maclean on guitar and vocals.
They were the first rock band to join Jac Holzman's Elektra label and success was instantaneous.
The first LP, LOVE, included a cover of "My Little Red Book" which reached #52 in the States, but overall the album lacked cohesion and suffered from an English-ness that sounded stiff and awkward. That said, the bad attitude and street suss that truly embodied the spirit of Love did emerge from time to time, as on Lee's "Signed D.C.". Love appeared on American Bandstand, with Lee confessing to be 'as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs'. However, despite this breakthrough, the band's refusal to tour outside LA hampered wider exposure.
da CAPO (1967) might have had a title translating as 'return to the beginning', but the second album bore no relation to the tenuous artefact that was the debut. Fleshed out with horns and a second drummer, the tone was bright and warm, and the music was ingenious and eclectic - this time in a way that consolidated the band's pop sensibility rather than confusing it. The album was weakened somewhat by "Revelation", an ambitious but ultimately indulgent blues jam that took up the whole of the second side, but three fine singles (THIS IS ONE OF THEM), were taken from side one the biggest hit - "7 And 7 Is" - being a quintessential proto-punk rocker with keen, surreal lyrics.
Yet da CAPO wasn't a huge success, peaking at #80 in the US. The band were living in a decaying Hollywood mansion previously used as a horror movie set. Within this cloistered setting, Love started work on their most famous album - and foundational rock text - FOREVER CHANGES (1967). This embodied the schizophrenia of the Aquarian Age, with music that was by turns ecstatic ("Alone Again Or"), spiteful ("Live And Let Live"), blissful ("And More Again") and deranged ("A House Is Not A Motel"). Warm and open brass sounds added to the froth, only for the reverie to be undercut by malevolent soloing. The album hit #24 in the UK, but failed to sell in the States, peaking at #154. Disillusioned, Love retreated into their Hollywood mansion and commenced their acrimonious implosion. ...
