About the Band 'Love Street'

Love Street were formed in Stillorgan around 1969 by drummer/lead vocalist Reg Walker, who had briefly played in pop group The Others (where he was ultimately replaced by future radio and TV presenter Ronan Collins). Walker also looked after the management of the group, and was joined by Aidan Cranny (bass/vocals) and Bryan O’Rourke (rhythm guitar/vocals) – both formerly with Paper Sun – and Peter Yeates (lead guitar/vocals). The band played around South Dublin and Wicklow and earned a residency in Stella House, Mount Merrion, and within months of forming they appeared on RTE’s ‘Like Now’ TV pop show. Soon Walker announced, “We sang ‘Venus’ on the show and afterwards had many requests to find out if we had got it on disc”, which prompted them to issue this single through Pye Records subsidiary Rose Records in March 1970. ‘Venus’ was a recent hit for Dutch group Shocking Blue, but The Sands showband also released their own version at the same time as Love Street. The ‘B’-side was an excellent cover of Buffalo Springfield’s ‘Rock And Roll Woman’, and both were recorded at Trend Studios.

The single was also issued by Pye in the UK, and even received a lavish picture sleeve release on the Piccadily label in Israel. In Ireland, the single reached the top ten in charts published by Spotlight Magazine. Further RTE TV appearances were planned, including music show ‘Imeall’ and a new show which replaced ‘Like Now’. Meanwhile, the residency in Stella House ended, but not before Love Street had played alongside such bands as Taste and The Fortunes. With the success of the single, Pye soon arranged for the band to record an entire album in Trend Studios, and tracks recorded included ‘On The Way Home’ (originally by Buffalo Springfield),‘Roosevelt And Ira Lee’ (by Creedence Clearwater Revival), ‘Tears In The Wind’ (by Chicken Shack), ‘Your Song’ (by Elton John) and a Reg Walker original titled ‘She’s Gone’. Unfortunately the band fell apart in July 1970 before the album was released, and worse, the only acetate of the album sessions was destroyed, although there are apparently some rough cassette recordings. Reg Walker went on to become singer with rockers Ned Spoone, while Aidan Cranny now plays traditional Irish music.
