On Tangerine 45
Effervescent saxophonist Louis Jordan was one of the chief architects and prime progenitors of the R&B idiom. His pioneering use of jumping shuffle rhythms in a small combo context was copied far and wide during the 1940s.
From 1942 to 1951, Jordan scored an astonishing 57 R&B chart hits (all on Decca), beginning with the humorous blues "I'm Gonna Leave You on the Outskirts of Town" and finishing with "Weak Minded Blues." In between, he drew up what amounted to an easily followed blueprint for the development of R&B. [Bill Dahl, All Music Guide ]
This 45 is one of his latter efforts, but still has that fun element that he spun out so effortlessly in the 1940s. This record finds him in August of 1964 on Ray Charles' imprint Tangerine Records. On this one he's reviving two songs that he had hitswith in 1946 and 1949. The topside is "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" and it's flipped with "Saturday Nite Fish Fry." Instead of his old boogie groove, he's updated this to the sounds of the time with a hip beat.
