SLEEVE: VERY GOOD+.  SOME SCUFFING ALONG TOP EDGE WITH TWO INCH SEAM SPLIT, LIGHT SHELF, CORNER, EDGE AND RING WEAR. CORNER BUMPS. PROMO STAMP ON REAR.   INNER SLEEVE VERY GOOD+ WITH NO SEAM SPLITS.

DISC: VISUALLY THIS DISC IS A REGULAR VERY GOOD+ WITH NO SCRATCHES, JUST A FEW PLAY SCUFFS AND HAIRLINES. UNFORTUNATELY, THESE RED LABEL TERRE HAUTE PRESSINGS ARE NOTORIOUSLY INADEQUATE, RANGING FROM POOR TO LISTENABLE.  WE HAVE YET TO HEAR A CLEAN COPY WITH NO INHERENT SURFACE NOISES, EVEN NEW SUPPOSEDLY MINT ONES HAVE IT.  ANYONE WITH A NEAR MINT PLAYING RED/STRIPES LABEL COPY HAS DEFIED THE ODDS!  IT DOES SEEM THAT THE BLACK LABEL DECCA PRESSINGS ARE BETTER, BUT THEY ALWAYS COMMAND A HIGHER PRICE AND ARE RARER.  WE HAVE PLAY-CHECKED THIS ALBUM BOTH SIDES ON A REGA RP10 TURNTABLE, AND CAN ONLY HONESTLY GRADE IT AS VERY GOOD AURALLY.  THERE WERE NO SKIPS OR JUMPS, AND SOME PARTS PLAY VERY GOOD+ TO EXCELLENT MINUS, BUT OTHERS VERY GOOD TO VERY GOOD MINUS ONLY.  THE WORSE PARTS HAVE A PRESSING CRACKLE IN PLACES WHICH CAN SPOIL THE ACOUSTIC BEAUTY OF THE MUSIC.  WE HAVE PRICED THIS ALBUM BASED ON ITS LESSER CONDITION, AND IT IS SOLD 'AS IS' AS STATED AS A GENUINE GOLDMINE 'VERY GOOD' ONLY.  NAMELY, IT PLAYS WITHOUT SKIPS, BUT THERE ARE SURFACE NOISES AND PRESSING NOISE IN PLACES. BUT HERE'S THE SAD TRUTH, IT SOUNDS WAY BETTER THAN ANY OF THE VINYL REISSUES AND CDS, ALL OF WHICH HAVE TERRIBLE VOCAL SIBILANCE AND A LACK OF PUNCH IN THE BOTTOM RANGE. I GUESS, ULTIMATELY, IF YOU LIKE THIS ALBUM (AND WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE ABOUT IT?), YOU NEED ONE OF EACH COPY.  CLEAN LABELS WITH NO SPINDLE WEAR APPARENT.

Why buy a first or early pressing and not a re-issue or a ‘re-mastered’ vinyl album?

First and early pressings are pressed from the first generation lacquers and stampers. They usually sound vastly superior to later issues/re-issues (which, in recent times, are often pressed from whatever 'best' tapes or digital sources are currently available) - many so-called 'audiophile' new 180g pressings are cut from hi-res digital sources…essentially an expensive CD pressed on vinyl.  Why  experience the worse elements of both formats?  These are just High Maintenance CDs, with mid-ranges so cloaked with a veil as to sound smeared.  They are nearly always compressed with murky transients and a general lifelessness in the overall sound.  There are exceptions where re-masters/re-presses outshine the original issues, but they are exceptions and not the norm.

First or early pressings nearly always have more immediacy, presence and dynamics. The sound staging is wider.  Subtle instrument nuances are better placed with more spacious textures. Balances are firmer in the bottom end with a far-tighter bass. Upper-mid ranges shine without harshness, and the overall depth is more immersive.  Inner details are  clearer.

On first and early pressings, the music tends to sound more ‘alive’ and vibrant.  The physics of sound energy is hard to clarify and write about from a listening perspective, but the best we can describe it is to say that you can 'hear' what the mixing and mastering engineers wanted you to hear when they first recorded the music.
