Another from my personal collection of over 50,000 UK albums that I have collected over a period of more than 45 years! 1st UK pressing of Lighnin Hopkins "Earth Blues" album on the Minit Records labels. This album was purchased over 40 years ago and originally only ever played to record to tape and then stored in a case with the vinyl separated from the cover and sleeve for protection. This is how I have always stored my records!! Features the earliest possible A#1 and B#1 Matrix endings (Only 1st UK press)! This album is complete with the original and beautiful 1st UK issue MacNeil Press printed laminated front only cover!! The audio is truly superb through out! Played and recorded at very loud volume on a top system,, importantly using a dedicated mono cartridge. Hear the complete recording in the player below. The audio is graded at Near as Mint in my opinion! No loud constant clicks or pops! So rich and vibrant throughout! Looks and sounds like it has barely ever been played at all in my opinion! Visuallly I struggle to see no more than one spider mark on the labels! (Note: The tracks featured on this album date back as far as the 1946-1949 and allowances must be made for some of the reproduction quality, recordings were taken from early 78 masters, some background surface noise will obviously be evedent in places and the odd interferance/pop/tick but mostly this album is clear and vibrant and a joy to listen to.
46 years old like this! Read the full full description below!
An audio archive copy! Hear for yourself in the player below! Actual MONO Recording from The Vinyl!
"Lightnin'" Hopkins (March 15, 1911 – January 30, 1982)was an American country blues singer, songwriter, guitarist, and occasional pianist, from Centerville, Texas. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him number 71 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
The musicologist Robert "Mack" McCormick opined that Hopkins is "the embodiment of the jazz-and-poetry spirit, representing its ancient form in the single creator whose words and music are one act".
Hopkins was born in Centerville, Texas, and as a child, was immersed in the sounds of the blues. He developed a deep appreciation for this music at the age of 8, when he met Blind Lemon Jefferson at a church picnic in Buffalo, Texas.
That day, Hopkins felt the blues was "in him". He went on to learn from his older (distant) cousin, the country blues singer Alger "Texas" Alexander.(Hopkins had another cousin, the Texas electric blues guitarist Frankie Lee Sims, with whom he later recorded. Hopkins began accompanying Jefferson on guitar at informal church gatherings.
Jefferson reputedly never let anyone play with him except young Hopkins, and Hopkins learned much from Jefferson at these gatherings.
In the mid-1930s, Hopkins was sent to Houston County Prison Farm; the offense for which he was imprisoned is unknown. In the late 1930s, he moved to Houston with Alexander in an unsuccessful attempt to break into the music scene there. By the early 1940s, he was back in Centerville, working as a farm hand.
Hopkins took a second shot at Houston in 1946. While singing on Dowling St. in Houston's Third Ward (which would become his home base), he was discovered by Lola Anne Cullum from the Los Angeles–based Aladdin Records. She convinced Hopkins to travel to Los Angeles, where he accompanied the pianist Wilson Smith.
The duo recorded twelve tracks in their first sessions in 1946. An Aladdin executive decided the pair needed more dynamism in their names and dubbed Hopkins "Lightnin'" and Wilson "Thunder
Hopkins recorded more sides for Aladdin in 1947. He returned to Houston and began recording for Gold Star Records.
In the late 1940s and 1950s he rarely performed outside Texas, only occasionally traveling to the Midwest and East for recording sessions and concert appearances. It has been estimated that he recorded between eight hundred and a thousand songs in his career. He performed regularly at nightclubs in and around Houston, particularly on Dowling St., where he had been discovered by Aladdin.
He recorded the hit records "T-Model Blues" and "Tim Moore's Farm" at SugarHill Recording Studios in Houston. By the mid- to late 1950s, his prodigious output of high-quality recordings had gained him a following among African Americans and blues aficionados.
In 1959, the blues researcher Mack McCormick contacted Hopkins, hoping to bring him to the attention of a broader musical audience engaged in the folk revival. McCormack presented Hopkins to integrated audiences first in Houston and then in California. He made his debut at Carnegie Hall on October 14, 1960, alongside Joan Baez and Pete Seeger, performing the spiritual "Mary Don't You Weep". In 1960, he signed with Tradition Records. The recordings which followed included his song "Mojo Hand" in 1960.

The Vinyl
On initial visual inspection the vinyl looks absolutely superb almost like a new vinyl in my opinion, Thick heavy, chunky slab of vinyl only found like this on the earliest pressings! I can't see or feel any scratches or marks that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops at all! Any marks that could possibly be seen would be light whypsy surface scuffs and sleeve removal type only.. ,perhapes the odd light surface scratch only. This lays perfectly flat on the turntable and are free from any warping. (Note! I have double checked this) The vinyl looks superb, still retaining its original glossy sheen from new. (no) deep needle scratches or marks that would cause any loud constant clicks or pops at all!
The Audio Quality
I have played the vinyl prior to listing on a top system at very loud volume! The audio is superbe cristal clear and very vibrant throughout! Top audio seperation on all frequencies only heard like this on early original 1st pressings! Note! Please allow for early recordings that date back as far as 1946-1949 Light background noise may be evedent during the play of some tracks and visolated pop or tick heard. Importantly there were no loud constant clicks/ticks, pops or any jumps from the vinyl truly awesome and very rare for a 1st pressing. Note: Isolated pop heard and slight surface background noise due to early recordings here and there but nothing consistant through out the audio. The audio is graded at least excellent plus to Near mint for the most part in my opinion!
PLEASE NOTE! I always add this disclaimer! I have played this album prior to listing as usual and have given my honest opinion on the audio quality. Please remember this is a 49 years old original vinyl (not a reissue) Please allow for the odd interference/static/crackle/tick/pop and surface background noise due to recordings from 1946-1949,, but importantly nothing consistant through out the audio! Please remember that this would have been originally played on a system that is 49 years old!
All indications i.e. that this vinyl has (not) been overplayed and in fact looks barely played in my opinion, (one spider mark trace that's all!), The audio quality superbe on all frequencies.
The labels
This features the "Minit" labels. These are superbe I can only see one spider mark only on the labels, (even when angled to the light) and little if (no) spindle ware! This vinyl looks barely ever played in my personal opinion!
The Record Sleeve
This is the original white poly lined sleeve. No splits or tears. Superb for 49 years old like this! Creasing/browning with age. The vinyl is now and has always been stored seperately from the sleeve. Note This is the original!
The cover
The original 1st issue laminated front only MacNeil Press Printed cover. Super Glossy Laminate. There are (no) edge splits or tears. The spine is generally lovely and square A truly superbe example rarely seen like this.! Note: Any creases or marks are very minor. Nothing nasty at all. The rear is remarkably clean and white for 49 years old. No rubbing or ring wear worth to mention. Any other imperfections, are not noticed unless looked for in my opinion. Must be at least better than excellent plus to very Near Mint in my opinion!
