Nothing more, nothing less, than one of two or three most important modern blues albums in existence, and DEFINITELY THE SINGLE RAREST 12-INCH BLUES ALBUM IN HISTORY, PERIOD!   So rare is this piece that not even many hardcore Blues collectors have seen one in decades of collecting. It is not an exaggeration to say that this album is a GOLDEN STANDARD by which rarity of other blues albums are measured.  On a 1-10 rarity scale, this piece registers 99.½ !. Myself, I can only say that this is the second playable copy I have seen in 37 years.

Even when found, this rare piece of Blues gold is usually in such a poor condition that it is virtually unplayable. To find one in such INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL CONDITION as this copy is really, truly impossible.

As for the music: this is Lightnin’ at his darkest, ominous, brooding, menacing best.  Even where accompanied by sublime rhythm section, he and his intricate guitar work take the stage front and center.  One or two tracks are uptempo tunes done in the manner of early amplified Memphis Blues on Sam Phillips’ Sun label, which is really fascinating, as they – in some ways– anticipate the imminent arrival of Rock’n’ Roll. I get tingles along my spine just THINKING of the music embedded in these grooves.   In short, this is a lean, mean, Lightnin’ Hopkins at his very finest.

No wonder, than, that many up-and-coming, aspiring young Blues artist went straight back to pumping gas after hearing this album only once.  Among the Blues albums, this surely is a Mount Rushmore, an unattainable Blues peak hovering above the fray.

A cornerstone of modern blues. No ifs, ands or buts. PERIOD!!!

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. Minor ¼” scratch noted between first two tracks on side 1, very unlikely that it is audible, but it is possible that it may produce a click and pop or two)

(b)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL LAMINATED COVER)

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)

-        Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-        Cover has some visible wear on the top seam and spine

-        Cover has a visible 'bump' (dent) in one corner ON FRONT PANEL ONLY (a small  piece of about ½ square inch of cardboard is dented and is missing); a professional paper restorer should be able to fix this with a minor effort (we regret we did not have time to accomplish this)

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
