Offered up for auction, (with no reserve), to the highest bidder is an exceptionally nice example of the uncommonly found LP Record, LIGHTNIN' AND THE BLUES by Lightnin' Hopkins on the obscure HERALD label. This 1960 mono release, (first pressing), is apparently the second LP offered to the public by the renowned Mr. Hopkins.
The LP itself grades a very strong near mint rating, and when viewed directly under a 100 watt light bulb, shows not a single scratch or scuff mark. The original luster on the vinyl looks perfect with no loss in the grooves. The record apparently has been played very little and has been handled very carefully. Not being content to let this one go without enjoying it myself, I gave this one a listen through, before offering it up for auction. From the first guitar lick, (which rings out like a bell) to the fade out on the last tune, the record fully captures the emotional intensity of the recording session. The sound is dynamic, pure, and utterly natural in all of it's analog glory! At no point did I note any compression or distortion caused by groove wear. Surface noise was at an absolute minimum and, for the most part, could only be detected in the silences between tracks, with the possible exception of a very few tiny ticks that are inherent in the pressing.
The front cover shows only very minor wear, no notable loss of coloration, and retains almost all of it's glossy finish. The back cover shows some very slight ring wear on the white surface, with the original price of $3.98 written in pencil in the upper left hand corner. Unfortunately, the seams have not held up very well. The bottom has a major seam split with a section of about 1 1/2" remaining intact in the center. The top edge has a 4" seam split and the spline likewise suffers a 4" split.
While the cover of this record is certainly not as solid as I would like it to be, the record inside is in extremely fine condition and plays exceptionally well, with startling clarity.
