On offer here is an extremely rare copy of Chopin's Polonaise Op.53 played by Leo Sirota, catalogue number HB-2077.

The Ukrainian-born Sirota is often described as the father of Western classical music in Japan, after settling there for 15 years between 1929 and 1941, and was also the first person in the country to play a Yahama piano in public, and to endorse them over the prevailing Steinway and Bechstein instruments of the time. His importance and influence on the development of classical music in Japan cannot be understated, and can be affirmed by any amount of research on the man.
Sirota made very few recordings in his lifetime, most of them being released on 12" 78rpm records on the small German 'Homochord' label, such as the one offered here. As such, they are extremely hard to find as very few were ever pressed and even fewer have survived the intervening years. An indication of this rarity can be found in the fact that only five such records have appeared in online auctions over the past decade - one in 2013, one in 2007 and a set of three in January of this year, with digital records of those sales accessible through a Google search for 'Leo Sirota 78'.
The record offered here is in a resonable condition, and the attached photographs document that visually so are to be inspected well. There appears to be some surface wear with light marks, and it must be recognised that side-A bears one notable scratch (illustrated fully in photos), though it is not a deep one and should not affect playback. The record is quite dirty and looks as if it would really benefit from a good clean, which may even raise its grade. I personally have not made any effort or attempt to clean the record as I wish to leave the choice of cleaning method to the buyer, who will no doubt be more experienced than me in carrying out such procedures to the high standard that this rare record deserves.
