LEGENDARY PINK DOTS :The Crushed Velvet Apocalypse (1990)  + lyric innersleeve

Vinyl LP [PIAS] BIAS 149

This seems to be the particular point in time, where the Legendary Pink Dots finally got over their move to Holland,
got over the loss of certain band members, and finally found themselves settled with a new direction. Their sound
here is much smoother than on previous releases, it's a fully rounded album based around textures and moods, rather
than the pop-hooks of the early years. There's a sense of martial pomp and ceremony to some tracks, and a smoky

lounge feel to others. Clarinet, oboe and saxophone (courtesy of Nils Van Hoornblower), envelope the seductive
arrangements, causing the melodies to elongate and bloom into a jazzy fog of relaxed cadences.  The band sound
confident, there's a knowledge here that they've found their feet, and they're given plenty of freedom to express

themselves and experiment behind the compelling vocals of Ka-Spel. The band may sound comfortable and relaxed
on this release, but Edward Ka-Spel is positively inspired.  The man's always had a strong sense of diction and
rhythm to his reedy tones, but here he seems to have discovered the well of excess verbiage.  Metaphors and similes
are tossed out with casual abandon, the lyrics aren't so much songs, but mini-novellas or abstract phrases combined
to create an emotive effect. Sure, it's not a perfect album, it's a touch overlong, and there's an occasional unfortunate
dip into the hideous waters of prog-rock excess.  It is, however, as fine an album to sit down and really waste an
afternoon's contemplation on, as any in my collection. There's something new to be discovered on each listen...
Euphoric shaking of the psychotropic barnacles.
