Label/Format: MGM – original and rare yellow format. Side one has the embossed ‘K T’ letters which are both pristine (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look stunning: very clean and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Try to find this album better.

Cat Number: MGM-CS-8014.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Rare and even more so in stereo. I can imagine only a small number of this album were ever initially pressed in the UK and this is the ultimate first made. This is a stunning example to owned by a connoisseur collector who only played his records on quality stereo equipment even from the early days. The price guides give little indication of the rarity of this man’s UK issued albums.

Brief Info: Best known in the UK for his work with Nancy Sinatra with whom he recorded several hit songs. Famed as a songwriter and his stunning baritone voice, this vintage 1966 gem sees the man prior to his trademark moustache. This was his earliest release in the UK and near mint stereo copies will prove incredibly difficult to locate. It features earlier versions of ‘Sand’ which he later recorded with Nancy as well his most famous song ‘These Boots Are Made For Walkin’. For fans of this legendary singer-songwriter, this is a prized album and will rarely be found like this again.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Quite High.

Cover Grade and Format: Difficult to grade this incredibly well preserved cover less than Mint(-). A single format with a laminated front that wraps around the closed edges on to three large rear flipbacks Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: Apart from a couple of ultra fine small surface creases, this is almost perfect with barely any dulling or friction rubs. All is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and the exposed strip on the right edge where it ends slightly short of full width is clean and unworn. Very shiny and clear and clean-shaved Lee artwork will rarely be found better. Noteworthy too, it has the word ‘stereo’ on the top right corner. Given that most albums in 1966 were purchased in mono, this is significant. A truly supreme front cover and practically as fresh and clean as when manufactured in the year England won the football World Cup – yes, this cover really IS that old!

Cover Back: The back is also in stunning condition and has barely aged a day. Clearly this one has barely seen daylight and I doubt if the record has been out of the cover for decades. The main unprotected back panel is clean with hardly any noteworthy marks or creases, no ring marks either. The flipbacks are neat and undamaged with minimal traces of any burring to their ends that remain totally grime-free.

Top Edge: Unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with no wear or feathering. Slightly rustic cutting in manufacture and clearly totally untampered with. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically as made: the ends are gently tapered in manufacture and retain fine shape. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. All edges remain ultra smooth to the fingertips with no grazing or laminate blemishing – amazing.

Corners: Light tip rub top left, that apart others as made and all retain excellent shape and definition.

Cover Summary: An incredibly well-preserved all round example of this very fragile mid-60’s cover, one that will prove nigh-on impossible to find much better. This beautiful item should please all collectors, even the connoisseurs.

The Inner: This vintage record includes its tracing paper lined inner sleeve in the same style as The Beatles of around this era. Also in lovely condition and only spoiled slightly by one corner crease. The delicate lining is undamaged and the window looks fantastic. No edge splits and clean too with minimal discolour with age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: To grade this beautiful record less than Mint(-) would not be doing it full justice – I can only tip my hat to the original owner. However there are a few ultra faint transit surface scuffs (but look hard) so I feel EX++ is correct. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence reitterated by top quality sound that will prove practically unbeatable. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This vintage gem plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds worthy of mention and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will get even close, let alone outperform this genuine first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
