Label/Format: London with matt surfaces with a gentle hint of texturing. As can be seen on side one, a detect in manufacture on the rim just left of the silver London logo.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a small few spindle marks on side two and just a couple on side one, with no wear around the hole area.

Brief Info: Brilliant debut album by one of the finest American songwriters of the era, his style ranging from pop to country. This a lovely UK original, and hard to believe this was first issued in the United States in 1963. Later in the decade, he became well-known with his work with Nancy Sinatra. Great songs with that deep distinctive voice, and not seen often. A very personal album and quite catchy and somewhat addictive, for me one of his very best (without Nancy). It appears little played and was a joy to play-grade.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: a single format with a Clarifoil laminated front. This covers all the folds and ends on back spine edge. The main rear panel is matt and smooth, it has the mono/stereo peep-hole, this has the red-brown inner denoting a mono copy inside. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains fine shine, but has moderately rubbed around the thick record’s rim. A few light creases, but no lifting of any real note, a sliver on the spine edge only. A small rub on the bottom right corner. Beautiful artwork with not too much detracting from its beauty as seen.

Cover Back: Again some moderate ring wear, mostly to the centre area of each edge. Possible enhancement from the original owner near the bottom. The peep-hole crisp and undamaged as seen in close-up. A little burring to the left edge, but overall for a near 50-year-old cover in deep black, this has fared reasonably well, but not for purists or those who do not like being reminded of age.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight with no wear, this in impressive condition.

Bottom Edge: Similar apart from the right corner that has a rub as stated.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Moderately light thickening or burring, but still quite neat overall. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with any compression patchy and light. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and hardly cracked laminate.

Corners: Light to moderate corner rubs with fine shape retained with no bashes.

Cover Summary: A fine all-round example of this scarce 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better, this is very prone to all forms of wear and not seen often. Enough to remind of age, but nothing too major, but not for perfectionists of course. Fantastic artwork and still generally attractive, it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a polylined Decca-style inner in red-brown colour for mono records. This fills the main cover peep-hole to denote the mode. Some crinkle/creasing, but little else to fault. Both window circles are crisp and undamaged, the lining clear and still fresh. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. One small more visible mark on track two side one that has no sound, so superficial and small anyway. Visually a super vintage mono record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, and this has spoken intros to some songs, thus quiet. A top-quality Decca-pressed record with no tracking issues*, this gives a great account of itself and is very well recorded. Few copies will outperform this first UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp being played on a revealing stereo system, for which it was not really designed. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and appears mainly carefully handled. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, in fact I put this to disc for my own future pleasure, I have been a fan of Hazlewood since a child when my father played his records. This could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended, the record especially is very impressive.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
