LED ZEPPELIN
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
In November of 1971, Led Zeppelin was again, at the top of the charts with an album in the US. But still, they weren't really a 'singles' band, and top 40 radio were a bit hesitant to play any of their music. They were considered a bit to heavy.
But this new album had a song that was doing remarkably well at album rock radio and they wanted so hard to cross it over. "Stairway To Heaven" was heavy, sure, but it kinda snuck up on you building and building to a crescendo. Perhaps if they made some concession to AM radio they could break it.
So Atlantic Records ran up this special promo version of "Stairway To Heaven" on 45rpm. Back at that time, you'd be hard pressed to find a top 40 station that would have an album in the studio. The song was nearly 8 minutes long, surely one of the longest things ever pressed into an uninterrupted 45rpm. In fact, it’s is nearly double what any pressing plant will recommend you put onto a single side of a 45rpm, so although it all fit, it was with quite low volume, and with a narrow groove that revealed every little bit of vinyl surface noise. Not a great solution, but quite the rare record.
This promo has the same song, in stereo on one side, mono on the other. The song was never available to the public on 45rpm, just in this very, very limited pressing for DJs in 1971. Due to demand, they ran up another promo 45 of "Stairway" in 1973 as PR 269. A NOTE ABOUT THE SOUND OF A REALLY LONG 45rpm
The 45rpm 7-inch platter is designed to hold an optimum of 3-4 minutes. This record pushes it to nearly double that limit. As such, the groove is nearly 60% LESS dynamic, it is a quieter record, with grooves less ‘wiggly’ by half of other records, so any record noise in the pressing is amplified 2x or more, when it it played louder to get it up to ‘normal’ volume. Although this record is unplayed – except for this sample – it will have some surface noise. They all do. It’s not recommended by any pressing plant to do anything even close to this amount of time at 45rpm.
