Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and trackable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

Label Conditions: All very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule, this double set appears hardly played and was cover protected by the one owner from new.

Rarity: Original UK pressings in this condition are very scarce. Many copies sold in the UK were pressed and manufactured in Europe and imported. The black cover very prone to wear and damage and many seen are hardly worthy of a second look. The odd small rub apart, this is a beauty and cover protection has ensured this looks impressive.

Brief Info: The first Led Zeppelin live album recorded on their 1973 tour of North America. A long double set for vinyl duration and never easily found that will play well with little unwanted. Well this one is very well pressed and was a pleasure to play-grade. A more elusive UK pressing and appearing hardly used by the one original owner who stored it one of those heavy-duty gatefold double sleeves back in the day. Not seen or heard a better example in decades.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better for an uncompromising wear-prone cover. A small light rub on the back left lower corner the only thing stopping the extra plus. An unlaminated gatefold format with the outer faces finely textured and embossed. The inside has an 8-page booklet adhered to the centre. Printed and made in England (this important detail seen on the lower inside back cover). As stated so many of these are German made for the UK market, UK copies are harder to find. This includes the two black inner sleeves.

Cover Front: Three moderately fine surface creases on the spine edge (one very small and light), any other blemishes minuscule, this looks superb due to the unusual lack of rubbing to these matt black surfaces. Any hint of a sticker residue trace hardly registers.

Cover Back: A light rub on the bottom left corner I feel certain is a small manufacture blemish as this was cover protected from new. Any other friction rub traces are gentle few and light and this back has no creasing. Even with the small blemish, this back will prove immensely difficult to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both inside front and back covers are superb with barely anything to fault. The 8-page booklet is the same. It is adhered to the centrefold hinge and held together with its two original staples with no loosening at all. All pages crisp, clean and sharp.

Top Edges: Both thick, straight and flush with barely any rubbing.

Bottom Edges: As above with any rubbing minimal, gentle, very patchy and light. Black storage edges seldom get less than this.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All four edges very sharp with barely any thickening. Records enter on these edges.

Spine and Text: Superb, and seldom seen as such. Solid, wide straight with minimal compression and any tilt slight. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text and surface unworn and very impressive.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this ruthless revealing and delicate 1970’s UK made cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(++)/(+): one virtually as made, the other with a hint of a crease on one lower corner. These matt black inners are unlined and all edges are naturally intact with any edge rubbing tiny and very little. The top-opening recessed areas are crisp and sharp with no tears, both clean and fresh. These are seldom found unsplit and this pair are little short of superb.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++)/(+): a very fine visual copy that are very clean with mostly equally fine shine and fairly solidly pressed. Side four as light dulling seen under light, probably from being left inside the cover for decades undisturbed. In terms of usage marks, barely any at all. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces from usage few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually super records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This live double album plays mostly even above it’s high visual gradings with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – having a duration somewhat above average for a vinyl record, the grooves are quite fine and compact – so the odd contact sound is virtually impossible to avoid. This is the best pressed example I have heard in many years and UK originals are seldom found better. Overall, a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early first UK pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, probably no more than a couple of times and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. The owner protected his covers in heavy-duty plastic protective sleeves hence the general lack of wear. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this quality set. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
