One of the most eagerly awaited double live albums released during the seventies. Technically, however, it was actually a soundtrack, taken from the motion picture of the same name (with additional audio tracks from the same dates) showcasing Led Zeppelin live on-stage at New York’s Madison Square Gardens.
The performances have, over the years, been assessed as being somewhat lackluster - the band, having completed a mammoth North American tour, were tired and stressed, looking to take a break from work. In addition the film has been criticised for being self indulgent, laced as it is with fantasy segments, questionable editing and gratuitous musical masturbation. Despite these critical reservations it does, however, remain a crucial and essential ingredient to any appreciation of the phenomena that was Led Zeppelin. Big, bold and capacious, the band’s ambitions had few boundaries and with a live album and spectacular film such as this, it is possible to fully appreciate just how breathtaking their mercenary approach really was. Taking absolutely no prisoners the band simply demolish the stage, laying waste with a sonic barrage few have ever come close to, let alone fully emulate.
Of course, any Zeppelin live performance wouldn’t be complete without ‘Stairway To Heaven’. The rendition captured here is both judicious and magical, with Plant excelling and Page delivering a profoundly longer and better solo than on the studio version.
Despite the many reservations outlined earlier, this album remained something of a benchmark for Zeppelin devotees, before being finally eclipsed by further live material excavated from the Zeppelin archives. Nonetheless the general consensus of opinion is that any live Led Zeppelin is great Led Zeppelin.
