Label/Format: Swan Song – Beautiful designed original examples and please note the ‘Made in UK’ text. This copy a FULL UK pressing, many versions sold in the UK were foreign pressings. These labels have matt, smooth surfaces with the correct usual ring ridges – the innermost circle around the hole is lightly textured. There are no WB logos.

Label Conditions: All four are immaculate, and I do mean IMMACULATE. Ultra fresh, clean and highly attractive with deep, rich colour and NO spindle marks on any. Yes, true – this amazing copy came from the same lot as the very impressive vintage Miles Davis albums I am currently offering, also the ‘Houses of the Holy’ (until Sunday), amongst others. Indeed my play-grade could have possibly been its very first. I have rarely seen a copy like this before, especially with the first matrixes numbers and details all explained below.

Cat Number: SSK 89400.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 110 / 120 grams. These being average weights for this album which varies somewhat.

Country of Manufacture: England: that is every part. So many of these were pressed in Germany and the early FULL English pressings are not as common as you might think, especially ones played only once or twice.

Rarity & Info: The title itself is hardly scarce but very early pressed UK copies are a little harder to find especially with two records barely even run-in in vinyl terms, that offer nigh-on perfect sound. A high percentage of this landmark classic are found pressed and made in Germany for the UK market. The cover is always immensely difficult to find in anything like top conditions, it being weakened by 41 die-cut windows, many are seen badly damaged with tatty, feathered and burr window edges – even torn. The edges always seem to fair worst, most are seen scuffed and badly rubbed, bashed or badly out-of-shape. Indeed this is the first one I have seen for years with the bottom storage edge practically as made. Quite simply, there were not enough pictures spaces (maximum 12) to show all I wanted too. But I felt obliged to show all the closed sides simply to show how exceptional this cover truly is. Also – as I have done on other occasions – I put white paper inside the cover to highlight just how crisp, clean and undamaged or worn ALL the window cut-outs are. Again, many show residues of poor cutting, burring or thickened (often split or torn). I have inspected every window up close, and no damage or miss-cutting is evident on any. All indeed are crisp and ultra sharp and neat as I hope my white backdrop close-up shows. PLEASE use the Ebay magnifier and check for youself – this innovative feature is one of Ebay’s better ideas and please use it on all my listings pictures. ALL I upload are to the highest resolution and size possible as I wish to hide NOTHING. All the inners are practically as new with NO splits or repairs. And even the single-fold white ‘Window’ sheet is equally impressive, clean and fresh with barely any hint of discolouration – that again never easy. As for the records: well both are superb, possibly unplayed prior to my mandatory sound-check. They have the earliest matrixes and are SUPERBLY pressed for absolute top sound quality. Like most Led Zeppelin albums, mass-production was the order of the day just to get units into shops knowing the absolute certainty of high demand and sales. I have heard far too many of these that have crackle and sound issues, but this pair play with ultimate clarity with barely anything unwanted. Later pressings hardly even compare really, that is why audiophile purists want the earliest pressings they can possibly find, this one will no disappoint and it will never need upgrading again. Cover-protected virtually since purchase, and the difference is more than apparent as is the total lack of handling or playing of the records. An ultimate upgrade? – quite possibly – Led Zeppelin connoisseurs, please apply.

Brief Info: A monumental landmark double set from the mighty Led Zeppelin and containing a vast array of varied music some of which must rate as their strongest ever. Issued nearly two years after Houses of the Holy this album topped both the UK and US album charts and was their sixth release. Such was the astonishing strength of this album – their first issue on their own new Swan Song label – their entire back catalogue again re-entered the top 200 album charts simultaneously, a feat to date never to have happened before. With over 80 minutes of powerhouse blues rock and some superb acoustic numbers, this awesome set has it all and this copy does it supreme justice.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High Indeed: with 41 – yes 41 cut-out windows (20 on the front and 21 on the back, some rectangular, some with arched tops) and a thick, box-like cover, this is vulnerable to all forms of wear. This very ‘airy’ boxy and ultimately flimsy cover (when empty expecially) becomes very delicate and fragile and few escape often major damage and wear. The fact the records enter within thick card inners via the top makes even entering and removal a hazardous operation. The window cut-outs often catch, tear or burr. All edges are equally vulnerable and rarely seen without often major rubbing, especially the bottom storage that, put simply, is VERY rare to find unworn. This cover is close to exceptional with any blemishes tiny, few and faint.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably undergraded at that. A UK-made example with all the appropriate text that reads: “SWAN SONG / 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10 - Cullderstead Ltd., trading as Swan Song - A Swan Song/Atlantic recording distributed by WEA Records Ltd. P & © 1975”. Surfaces are matt and smooth, windows as mentioned already. Includes the two UK card inner sleeves and the gatefold ‘white window’ insert sheet.

Cover Front: Firstly, the windows: all are very crisp and sharp with barely even a hint of burring or thickening. The cutting crisp and neat with barely any traces of thinned card residues whatsoever. Quite likely, as the tool wore, the cuts became less crisp and left more unwanted card in these open windows. Small details make all the difference and these windows are simply immaculate. The rest of the front is almost the same, a fine mark near the top almost nit-picking as there is nothing else of any note to fault – simply as clean, fresh and uncreased as they get.

Cover Back: All very similar again. Again I have closely inspected all the windows up close and they are fantastic, almost too perfect to be true in fact. Any blemishes to the main artwork minimal with just a tiny rub trace near the top right corner right on the very edge. Again please use the magnifier to check out the windows that I have highlighted by placing white card inside to show the immaculate crisp details.

Top Edge: This is the entrance edge and hugely vulnerable and rarely seen totally sharp or unsoftened by usage. Any chipping or thickening here is tiny and very light, and this is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way – as indeed is the entire cover and ALL contents. Even the fragile corner tips that have scant support are crisp and perfectly shaped with no compressions, dinks or creasing.

Bottom Edge: This is the VERY BEST I have ever seen since I bought a copy way back in 1975. This is edge is near impossible to find uncrushed, misshapen, bashed or rubbed. Well this one is like new, and that is no exaggeration – check out the picture again. All ink is fully intact and perfectly square and crisp, the word immaculate hardly does this vulnerable area justice.

Right Edge & Left (Spine): Again both are immaculate, unworn, crisp and uncrushed. Perfect shape right up to the very top open corner ends. This a near impossible achievement based upon just about all others I have seen over time. The very tip of the right corner end a little darkened taking blemishing to almost extreme levels of detail – but get out the magnifiers. The left edge has the red vertical text which is pristine Mint and very dark and totally unfaded. This has never been exposed to light and again looks brand new. Red spine text has a tendancy to fade or lighten, even going pink, this being deep red and looking stunning. For extra good measure, all the covers folds are unscuffed, crisp and unrubbed as well – that is rarely seen.

Corners: All are massively above average with little to fault at all. So many are rounded, bashed or even broken with tears. The top pair are merely superb, the tinge of darkening to one as mentioned but crisp and very neat, even uncreased. The bottom pair, well they look brand new and I can with total honesty, I have not seen this pair like this since 1975. Even from new in the shops, these got bashed and creased when put into delivery boxes for distribution.

Cover Summary: With any blemishes tiny, very few and faint, this is a UK original cover that will blow most others away. Only probably one in several thousand will match or better this. A possible ‘final’ upgrade example that could prove the ultimate upgrade for many. As stated, the album is hardly rare, but one with a cover like this is – fact.

The Inner Sleeves: PRACTICALLY MINT: both as close to new as they get, one super-fine surface crease trace to each if I really have to mention such trivia – but if I spot it, I will mention it. These are unlined, both unsplit with no thins or even edge rubbing, very clean with NO repairs. No rubbing, no dinks or rim impression, even the side entrances are razor sharp. They have a matt surfaces and quite thick. Also these originals have a rough textured feel INSIDE, later ones have a smoother inside surface, so hardly record surface friendly making a pair or records like this all the more rare and desirable.

The Folded ‘Slip’ Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: clean, fresh with no ‘set-off’ from the inners which happens all too frequenly on this unless kept away from those dark surfaces. No creasing, edge thickening or toning, this has not aged at all and includes all the details as per the main cover. Even the back plain side is near pristine with just a trace of darkening to the very ends, but not to the front, all corners crisp with perfect 90 degree tips that are uncreased. The bottom fold has a thin edge, this totally uncrushed with perfect shape retained. The credit details to confirm: “Gothic Print Finishers Ltd., London SE9 2EQ”. Also with the “Swan Song SSK 89400” catalogue number and address “SWAN SONG, 484 KINGS ROAD, LONDON SW10”.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) to NEAR MINT: both very clean with superb shine and freshness, this pair possibly unplayed prior to my mandatory play-grade. Four gorgeous labels and playing surfaces practically the same. Any surface traces are ultra fine fine, few and faint – with the unlined card inner sleeves having a distinct rough feel inside, any blemishes are nigh-on impossible to avoid, but this pair have done their very best. There are NO stylus marks and finding this pair of very early-made UK records better will prove beyond difficult. I have heard several of these that have looked pristine only to crackle, pop and click due to indifferent pressing quality. Well this pair excelled and offers little else but superb, clean reproduction of the sublime power-house rock as their fans demand. First UK pressings are a class above the rest and always have the very best chance in offering top sound – but that said, it can never be guaranteed making a full play-grade sound-check crucial. For me, nothing is more important than the audio quality and this pair really DO deliver.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play superbly well and match or even better their visual grading with barely anything to fault. Powerful, distortion-free sound with amazing sonic delivery of the music that only the original analogue format truly offers. Heavy rock albums always sound better via vinyl with the depth, power and full dynamic range it really offers. Probably the cleanest pressed pair I have heard for a considerable time. Any surface sound barely even registered and there are no pressing issues or unwanted noises. All frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range, ultimate fine detail and delivery. This was a joy and gave a true sense of awe, the power of Bonham’s percussion has to be heard from the vinyl source. Few copies will match or better this very early, barely run-in British pressing I feel sure, and these records (and the packaging) have probably not seen light-of-day for decades. An original time has overlooked – as did the owner, they are rarely found like this these days. Taking both records for what they offer plus the very impressive cover and it’s contents, this is an immensely impressive all-round UK example that commands my highest possible recommendation. An ultimate upgrade? – I think so – DO NOT LOSE THIS ONE.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
