WHETHER THE B4 OR B5 IS THE FIRST PRESSING IS A BIT OF A MOOT POINT AS CHRONOLOGICALLY THEY WERE ALL PRESSED AROUND THE SAME TIME - MY OWN COPY, BOUGHT IN THE FIRST WEEK OF RELEASE HAS THE B5 MATRIX, AND JUST A COUPLE OF MONTHS LATER THE SMALL WB LOGO WAS INTRODUCED TO THE LABEL MAKING THESE LATER PRESSINGS EASILY IDENTIFIABLE
Led Zeppelin returned from a nearly two-year hiatus in 1975 with Physical Graffiti, a sprawling, ambitious double album.
Zeppelin treat many of the songs on Physical Graffiti as forays into individual styles, only occasionally synthesising sounds, notably on the tense, Eastern-influenced "Kashmir."
With John Paul Jones' galloping keyboard, "Trampled Underfoot" ranks as their funkiest metallic grind, while "Houses of the Holy" is as effervescent as pre-Beatles pop and "Down by the Seaside" is the closest they've come to country. Even the heavier blues -- the 11-minute "In My Time of Dying," the tightly wound "Custard Pie," and the monstrous epic "The Rover" -- are subtly shaded, even if they're thunderously loud.
Most of these heavy rockers are isolated on the first album, with the second half of Physical Graffiti sounding a little like a scrap heap of experiments, jams, acoustic workouts, and neo-covers.
This may not be as consistent as the first platter, but its quirks are entirely welcome, not just because they encompass the mean, decadent "Sick Again," but the heartbreaking "Ten Years Gone" and the utterly charming acoustic rock & roll of "Boogie With Stu" and "Black Country Woman."
Yes, some of this could be labeled as filler, but like any great double album, its appeal lies in its great sprawl, since it captures elements of the band's personality rarely showcased elsewhere -- and even at its worst, Physical Graffiti towers above its hard rock peers of the mid-'70s.
Side One: Custard Pie / Rover / In My Time Of Dying
Side Two: Houses Of The Holy / Trampled Underfoot / Kashmir
Side Three: In The Light / Bron-y-Aur Stomp / Down By The Seaside / Ten Years Gone
Side Four: Night Flight / Wanton Song / Boogie With Stu / Black Country Woman / Sick Again
LABELS: MINT
An immaculate set of factory-fresh labels - no spindle traces or any sign either record has ever been played
VINYLS Visual: MINT/EXCELLENT
All four surfaces shine like-new - Record Two has some light marking from the card inner but these is purely cosmetic and have little audible impact
VINYLS Audio: NEAR MINT
The audio on this sprawling masterpiece is strong and dense with a rich and finely detailed sound and my play-check at volume found practically nothing to fault - the (very) occasional static tick was noted - nothing really - but I did not clean this copy as it looks so immaculate so these will no doubt disappear after a clean/few spins - one of the cleanest, finest sounding copies I have heard in a long while
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT
Apart from two of the die-cut windows having snags (please see close-up photographs) and the red spine text being faded over time the cover is in great shape - crisp, clean and sharp with little edge wear to speak of
INNER SLEEVES: MINT/NEAR MINT
Both inners are clean - no seam splits - one has a single thumb crease toward the opening edge
INNER SLIP: EXCELLENT+
The gatefold inner slip has some light foxing spots but is otherwise unmarked
