Description
Led Zeppelin IV A3 / B4 Red/Plum with 'Top' Credit
There are of course numerous versions of this red/plum pressing and this one has the second matrix variation and the incorrect 'Top' credit on the S2 label.
This particular pressing plays to an excellent standard overall but with some light static here and there. However, there are no ticks, clicks or pops and it worth noting that the gatefold and inner are absolutely stunning! The cover is super clean with no obvious wear and the lyric inner is perfect can you believe with no splits, tears or marks.

The audio on S1 is Ex+ (Track 2 Mint- / T4 ranges between VG+ and Ex+)
The audio on S2 is Ex+ (T1 Near Mint- / T2 Near Mint)
The gatefold is Near Mint
The original inner is Mint (wow!)
The labels are Near Mint
Visual grading
The vinyl is in great condition and retains a very strong glossy sheen with no obvious marks or scratches. There are only a small number of very faint hairlines plus one small 'squiggle' mark near the end of S1 but this has no affect on the audio. Visually it is a very impressive vinyl and has only minimal spindle wear also.
Play grading
S1 starts with a superb rendition of 'Black Dog' that plays with great clarity and power. There is just a little underlying static here and there but it is very quiet and the music still plays very clearly indeed. There are no clicks or pops and Page's solo has no distortion at all. I think an Ex+ grade is about right.
'Rock And Roll' is immense from start to finish! With stunning power and definition there is almost zero static here and it could hardly play any better. Again there is no distortion and Mint- is easily deserved.
The quiet intro on 'The Battle Of Evermore' plays beautifully with only a couple of barely audible dust ticks. As the vocal begins there is only very minimal light static in the background and is not at all intrusive in my opinion. Each note still plays very clearly and there are no ticks, clicks or pops. It continues to play extremely well with only very minimal static and there is much to admire here. A very strong version with no obvious intrusion and the long fade out is perfect. I will grade as Ex+ although there are many sections that are better than that.
The opening notes on the classic 'Stairway To Heaven' play with stunning precision but after about 15 seconds there is a little static in the background. As the vocal begins it plays very well with no clicks or pops but I would say the light static does persist and if anything gets a little louder as you approach the end of this section. As Bonham joins in the clarity is much improved and the playback here is very strong indeed. A little more static further in but Page's solo then plays superbly and the 'high end' vocal section is the same with no intrusion. This powerful section is very impressive and for once has no distortion and the final quiet section that brings the track to a close has barely any 'background'. Not a perfect version but like I say there are no clicks or pops and it is only the static that is a little intrusive at times. I would say it ranges between VG+ and Ex+
--------------------------------------------------------------------
'Misty Mountain Hop' plays with great precision from the start and continues to play with outstanding quality. There is no obvious 'background', just a minor hint of barely audible static which I am probably only picking up because I sit so close to the speakers! It is a very strong version and again there are no ticks, clicks or pops. The fade out also plays to perfection. I would say this track deserves a Near Mint- grade.
The intro on 'Four Sticks' plays with stunning clarity and this audio is prevalent throughout. It plays with exceptional definition and there really is nothing to fault. There is barely any static and there is certainly no intrusion on the audio from beginning to end. Such an impressive version and Near Mint is a fair assessment.
'Going To California' has one mega light tick on the intro and the first verse then has only minimal static in the background. Thereafter it plays very well with only some light static here and there but nothing that I would deem intrusive. Yes I have mentioned static quite a bit but it is only very quiet here and there are no clicks, pops etc! Ex+ I would say.
The percussive intro on 'When The Levee Breaks' is 'as new' and it then plays very strongly but with some background static every now and then. Again it is by no means loud but you can hear it. Nonetheless it is an excellent version and has no inner groove distortion which is a rarity. In fact the more you get into this classic the more impressive it is. The power and depth is evident and the second half in particular is stunning. An Ex+ finish to the album in my opinion.
In summary the entire album has no ticks, clicks or pops and the worst you can say is that there is some static here and there. Yes it is somewhat persistent on some tracks but it is generally very quiet for the vast majority. A little more on Stairway To Heaven but then this is the one track that is always heavily played of course but even then many sections still do play very well. S2 plays with excellent clarity overall and there are not really many negatives. just to reiterate the cover is in lovely condition and the inner has no splits which you hardly ever see today!
The Gatefold
This cover has been very well cared for down the years and has very little shelf wear. The top edges are in perfect condition and the bottom edges have only very minimal rubbing. The spine is in superb shape with only the bare minimum of wear on the corners. The right hand corners are incredibly clean with barely any wear and the opening edge is pristine. The front cover is stunning and has no marking and the back cover is almost as good with only two faint but very clean sticker marks (I think) top left. The inside of the gatefold is immaculate with no marking and it has to be said that this is one of the finest examples of this cover that I have seen in a long time. It is also very strong and robust still like it hasn't been handled very much at all.
The Inner Sleeve
The 'lyric' inner sleeve is a work of art! So rarely are they found as perfect as this - it has no side splits, no tears and no creasing either. Even the flipbacks are undamaged. This is of course made with paper and for it to be as pristine after nearly 50 years is such a rarity. You don't need me to tell you that!
The Labels
The red/plum labels are in superb condition and have no marking, writing or mottling. There is only minimal spindle wear as stated.
