Label Condition: Both fresh, clean and attractive with any spindle traces very fine and faint as seen under light.

Run-Out Groove Etched Messages: ‘Do what thou wilt’ (on side one, this now somewhat blurred, but present nonetheless).

Brief Info: A masterful third release - arguably and unfairly overshadowed by I, II and IV. This a more varied album with more use of acoustic instruments than previously. A wonderful set with it’s beautiful moving wheel packaging that was designed by ‘Zacron’ (Visual Creations). A graphic artist of the London scene of the 1960s. His logo is seen on the inside bottom right corner area. Again peaking at No. 1 in the UK and US, this band could do little wrong at this time. This a very fine example on the new Kinney Atlantic label. The record hardly played and offering superb sound. The cover, now printed by Gothic Print is interesting. The wheel part looking inside, I feel sure should have been sandwiched between two pieces of inside card and pivoted on a pin that is present. But this one was just placed inside and the pin was not attached. So the wheel now can be easily removed to view – that is very unusual indeed, and the very first time I have ever seen this. Indeed, I have never seen a fully exposed wheel on this cover, and is a real piece of art, far too good to hide inside the cover as seen. The cover itself is gorgeous and fresh, the only blemishes a very small pull mark on the inside of the top left and right. Possibly from a small piece of adhesive in manufacture, this got stuck and pulled when opened. However, little detracts from this unusual and magnificent looking set. With the new (and old) matrixes showing only A and B and no stamper, this is very early. Most Kinney copies including only the K matrixes and with numbers e.g. A 1 / B 2 etc. These are seldom seen or offered, these Kinney copies obviously had steady sales, but the heaviest sold were the Plum first issues.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(+): but actually looks more Mint(–), only marked down for the small surface pulls inside that show little. A fully laminated gatefold format with the moving wheel and 11 die-cut windows on front. As seen and stated, the wheel is more like an insert and easily removes (if wanted to view). Possibly an error in manufacture, but that is no definitive. It can still be rotated with care when inside. Printed and made in England by Gothic Print, includes the plain white, quite distinctively shaped inner sleeve.

Cover Lamination – Front & Back: Even though this cover is fully laminated, if often ages badly. All 11 circle windows are crisp and neat with no burring or damage. The wheel, even though not attached, still can be rotated. The laminate itself retains supreme shine, clarity and freshness and with almost total adhesion – just a tiny lift on the back bottom left corner tip. There are no line or slivers of non-adhesion that are commonly seen, especially on the ‘Day’ version, also barely any creasing. Any marks or blemishes, barely any and faint, also the lack of yellowing is a major plus. Both sides are snowy white and put as simply as possible – look fantastic.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Fully laminated and ultra shiny, the only blemishes a couple of very small pulls on the top right corner areas – so not perfect. But this apart, nothing else to really fault.

The Wheel: PRACTICALLY MINT: the first one I have ever seen that removes from the cover without any damage to it or sleeve. And yes, this is even laminated on the printed side – and it gleams with freshness. Although the centre has a hole for the inside ‘pin’, this possibly was never attached – again, that is not definitive. With such beautiful artwork, this is almost totally obscured when inside, only certain parts seen through the window holes. The back is a matt deep blue colour with no print. Rare to see this, and I truly consider it a bonus, there are no real indicators on the main cover to how this became removable, it could have simply become detached from the pin, or the ‘casing’ inside has somehow by-passed it. Whatever, it is what it is and can be seen in its full Mint glory.

Top Edges: Largely straight, smooth and flush with no wear.

Bottom Edges: Immaculate as-made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Firstly, the back opening storage edges: both immaculate with no wear or thickening. The front ‘wheel’ edge is open, this reveals a central ‘pin’ or spindle that should locate to the wheel hole, but clearly as not on this one. Also inside on the inside side, is white card also the die-cut window holes. Logic tells me the wheel should lie underneath this card to sandwich the wheel inside and hold it in place – but, again, this is my opinion and not definitive. But why else would there be two sets of die-cut window holes? The wheel simply slips inside this front entrance which is neat, inside is small evidence of adhesive, so it could equally be a case of coming unstuck due to lack of glue which is more than likely.

Spine and Text: Absolutely immaculate, the very best I have seen to date. Very solid and largely straight with minimal hint of compression. All text perfect under solid clear laminate, this with no scuffs or peeling, also superbly centred as seen.

Corners: Any tip rubbing tiny and light, excellent (right) to practically mint (spine) shape retained with no bashes or dinks.

Cover Summary: A deceptively difficult cover, often with many laminate issues and ageing. But this one is fresh and ultimately attractive (bar the tiny pulls inside as mentioned), these are minimal and hardly even catch the eye’s attention. The wheel and its easy removal makes it a curio example, and just to be able to view this laminated disc in its full glory is arguably a considerable plus. Visually, this is one of the finest I have seen to date.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a plain white unlined inner with quite curved corners, so this a little unusual as well. This is practically like new with no creasing, grubbiness or edge splits (or repairs).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): one side has a very gentle hint of dulling seen critically under light, probably from not being removed from a replacement soft lined inner for many years. This record looks hardly even played. A very clean record, still with a lovely shine when viewed in average room light and solidly pressed. Any actual real surface marks minimal, few, fine and faint again viewed critically under my bright ‘grading’ lamp. With so many of these (and other early Led Zeppelin albums) most often seen played to destruction, this is a lovely copy to please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality, new Kinney pressing with the scarce A/ B matrixes plays superbly and was a pleasure to play-grade. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. This pressing was not as mass-produced and rushed out like the plum copies, this gives a fantastic account of itself. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
