Label/Format: Atlantic – orange and maroon (‘plum’) format with matt, gently textured surfaces. This has the revised song title ‘Killing Floor’ instead of ‘The Lemon Song’, but plays the same song of course.

Label Conditions: Both retain strong, rich and vibrant colour with just a tiny few small dulled tone spots seen under light. Spindle marks are light and mostly fine and faint. The record plays impressively and was a pleasure to hear again on early vinyl.

Rarity: Led Zeppelin II albums are not that hard to find, let’s be honest. But finding clean examples that offer high quality sound, very fine looks and a lesser-worn cover are a different matter. I use the term ‘lesser-worn’ for the clear reason of finding near top grade covers is massively difficult. One of rock’s most unforgiving sleeves and seldom seen much above very good. The records were so often played to destruction – and why not? – since issue, it has retained it’s classic status and is one of rock’s most popular albums. So not too difficult to find heavily played, scratched and poor sounding copies, but very clean little marked or played copies is a different matter.

Album Information: For many the greatest rock album of all time – a monumental and evergreen classic. Without any doubt, ‘Whole Lotta Love’ remains the definitive heavy rock anthem ever made. The album justifiably charted at Number 1 in the UK and US. After the raw brilliance of the heavy blues rock debut, ‘II’ expands the horizons still further. Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham rarely ever sounded better than on this massive issue. All rock fans and collectors will know this album well already – it’s content is legendary and it simply refuses to age or it’s ‘classic’ status diminish. This is one of the ‘Most Wanted’ albums ever made, and so it should be. This copy has the ‘Killing Floor’ song on the label changed from ‘The Lemon Song’ for legal reasons – the song plays exactly the same of course. Also worthy of mention is the cover: the first issues had a paler brown cover than slightly later ones. The Killing Floor plum pressings had a darker, usually more mid- to darker brown sleeve. This one fairly dark and of course has the original 588198 catalogue number. This has withstood the rigours of time and handling better than most and remains attractive. There is possible enhancement to the top and bottom edges, this not certain, but if so, it is fairly subtle and mostly seen viewed end-on. The main surfaces are totally natural and attractive as-seen. The album is completed with the June 1970 dated inner sleeve.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(–): and in context of how wear-prone it is, arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. This the correct mid-brown colour, ironically, due the label title being changed, these still retained ‘The Lemon Song’. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day, includes the polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A few light marks and traces of tip enhancements (done well by the particular previous owner). Any creasing or rubbing to the main surface area little and very light. Indeed this surface retains unusual excellent unfaded colour or rubbing with no sticker issues. Certainly one of the better fronts I have seen for this cover for some time.

Cover Back: The term ‘wear prone’ hardly covers this back that is rarely seen in anything like decent condition. Again, I consider this one very impressive and lacking the usual ugly ring wear and rubbing most have these days. A little gentle creasing and only very mild hint of rim impression. But with virtually all ink intact, this back sets a very high standard.

Cover Gatefold Inner: A surface mark towards the bottom edge corner area apart, little else to fault.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush with trace of light rubbing. As stated, likely neat enhancement is apparent.

Bottom Edges: Similar to above with a little more wear/enhancement to uncompromising storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still reasonably sharp, the back ones especially so with very little wear. Any thickening mild seen viewed end-on. The record enters on the back edge, the front being sealed – both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Somewhat against the odds, the spine has fared very well. Solid, straight with minimal compression, also folded square so the edges meet up flush and parallel – this always makes for a much neat looking cover. The surface appearing natural bar perhaps the very ends and all text fully present, well-centred and strong as-seen.

Corners: Small tip rubs, likely neatly enhanced as stated with fine to very fine shape retained with no nasty knocks. The odd tiny fine tip crease only.

Cover Summary: A classic cover in highly respectable condition overall – I think this has more positives than negatives being honest with the main areas all looking attractive. But clearly not for the purist who wants only ‘perfection’ as any cost. All said, this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a Polydor-style lined inner that is date-coded 0670 (June 1970). Gently aged with the usual paper darkening which is mild, any creasing light and all edges unsplit with no repairs. Both window circles crisp and neat with the polylining quite clear and fresh.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(–): a fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on evidence, it has fine, quite wispy numerous surface marks as seen critically under bright light. These being superficial, there are no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a nice record that should please many collectors, but not quite for the more discerning visual purists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent classic album plays even above it’s visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Although a heavy rock album, most will known it has a few quieter passages, so the odd sporadic tick or contact trace sound is near impossible to avoid, especially being played on highly revealing equipment. Although it has fine surface marks, it’s likely few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly. Both channels are clean and sharp and has been generally well stored, the general play-grade experience was very pleasing and enjoyable. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this legendary album. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
