LED ZEPPELIN II Robert Ludwig HOT MIX RL Atlantic SD 8236 1st U.S. pressing featuring the infamous loud mix that was later withdrawn and a new mix with less bass was released.
It is almost impossible to find a copy of this record in good condition! Every one I have seen has been "well loved" to death, and this one is no exception. The good news is that even when these puppies are scratched up, the loud mix always seems to come through, and because this is a full on rock album with very little quiet segments, much of the record rocks hard and is very enjoyable despite the background noise.
Presswell pressing as indicated by the PR on the labels. RL and SS etched on both sides of the dead wax.
VINYL in G/G+ condition overall, many scratches and scuffs, some groove wear but not too bad, when this thing is rocking it sound more like VG or even VG+ !! I listened to the whole record and noted any flaws.
Whole Lotta love: At the beginning where the single guitar riff, there's a skip at the beginning of the riff. When the song goes to the middle part, it skips when there is just a solo high hat before the "psychedelic part".
Ramble On: Very end at the fade out there's about 3 click and a skip.
Lemon Song: One skip after the vocal part "hey........hey........."
Thank You: A few skips on this one, skip before .....there would still be you an me. one after.....olive branch. one after when mountains crumble...... when the song starts to fade out there the record sticks on one section and the needle has to be moved over. There is a repeating click at the end of the fade out, when the song fades back in there are no skips.
COVER in G+ condition with staining/rubbing, chipping and rubbing along the top and bottom seams, spine has some chipping and yellowing, the top and bottom seams are split about 1/2' on the top at the opening and 1" on the bottom. There is a middle split in the inner gatefold (see photos).

US 1st pressing (with the 1841 Broadway address on the labels), featuring Robert Ludwig's "hot" mastering on both sides. These were withdrawn early because the high bass levels caused low-grade cartridges to mistrack, leading people to return the album on the belief that it was defective. Another engineer was then hired to recut a much less "hot" version of the album, and that is the far more common version.On some copies the Sterling Sound credit, "SS", appears in both runouts following Ludwig's "RL", and on others the "SS" appears only in the Side Two runout. The "RL" will still appear in both runouts.
This sub should only be used for copies with "RL" in both runouts. Later transitional pressings which featuring "RL" on only one side and another engineer's work on the other should receive their own subs.
"PR" in label matrix denotes a Presswell pressing.
"LW" in runouts indicates Longwear Plating metal parts.
"AT" in runouts indicates Atlantic Studios mastering
"W" in runouts indicates that blank lacquers came from the company Audiodisc.
