Description
Up for auction is a rare original 1969 copy of the classic Led Zeppelin II released by Atlantic Records #SD 8236. Visually graded using Goldmine standards, the vinyl is VG++ (borderline near mint) with amazing shine and very light surface marks that can only be seen holding up to a strong light at an angle. The gatefold jacket is near mint with no splits, creases, ring wear or other issues except for some very light soiling which can be seen in the white areas of the covers. This one has all the signs of the legendary "hot mix" pressing done by Robert Ludwig. His initials "RL" are etched in the dead wax on both sides and the label features the original Broadway Street address and not the later Rockefeller address found in later pressings. Next to his initials etched very lightly are the letters "SS" for Sterling Sound where Robert was the staff mastering engineer. The Matrix numbers are ST-A-671671-1B and ST-A-671672-1A. It also has the original matted textured cover as opposed to the glossy cover of later pressings. Considered by many audiophiles as THE TOP VERSION. Supposedly it was re-mastered afterwards because most cheap cartridges in cheap stereos couldn't handle the loudness, causing the LP to skip and causing many returns of the "defective" LP. I did end up comparing "Whole Lotta Love" from a later reissue to this original RL copy and was blown away by the difference in sound. I heard elements of the song that I've never heard before on the RL version come alive out of the speaker. Comes with original Atlantic inner sleeve. Do Not Miss This One!!
Led Zeppelin II is the second studio album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin, released in October 1969 on Atlantic Records. Recording sessions for the album took place at several locations in the United Kingdom and North America from January to August 1969. Production was entirely credited to lead guitarist and songwriter Jimmy Page, while it also served as Led Zeppelin's first album to utilise the recording techniques of engineer Eddie Kramer.
Led Zeppelin II furthered the lyrical themes established on their debut album, creating a work that became more widely acclaimed and influential than its predecessor. With elements of blues and folk music, it also exhibits the band's evolving musical style of blues-derived material and their guitar and riff-based sound. It is considered the band's heaviest album.
Upon release, Led Zeppelin II earned a considerable amount of sales and was Led Zeppelin's first album to reach No. 1 in the UK and the US. In 1970, art director David Juniper was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Recording Package for the album. On 15 November 1999, it was certified 12x Platinum by the RIAA for sales in excess of 12 million copies. Following its initial reception, it has been recognised by writers and music critics as one of the greatest and most influential rock albums ever recorded.
