Label/Format: Atlantic – Japanese pressing with matt, smooth surfaces. This has the very deep green and brick red colour labels.

Label Conditions: Both are very clean, fresh and attractive with only a very small few light, fine and faint spindle marks as seen under bright angled light. This record offers supreme sound throughout with nothing unwanted, a wonderful experience.

Cat Number: P-10125.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. A quite typical weight for Japanese records. They are arguably the cleanest and consistently best-pressed records in the world.

Country of Manufacture: Japan.

Rarity: Imported Japanese albums were not pressed in great numbers, fewer still made their way outside the country. Most who bought these expensive imports were audiophile purists who simply wanted to hear a very reliable top quality record and this one failed to disappoint. I just wish UK versions – on any label – could consistenly match this, but alas, that it seldom the case and that is being quite honest. I have found even the UK Atlantic ‘Plum’ issues to be variable in terms of unwanted noise and pressing issues, indeed finding one that will play ‘perfectly’ is beyond difficult. Well this fantastic Japanese record is little short of that, it plays superbly and gave me that rare tingle factor only the greatest sounding record ever can. Japan manufactured their vinyl records to the highest standard and was never mass-produced – there lies the difference. Quality vinyl, small pressing runs and audiophile sound quality – that simple. For those who want to experience this rock masterpiece to the maximum, look no further.

Brief Info: After the issue of three sublime albums, how could this legendary band offer even more? Well the answer was with this untitled album, always known as IV. It’s unscripted sleeve design suggested anonymity, but nothing was left to question over this album’s content. An undisputed masterpiece within the genre of ‘Rock’. Led Zeppelin were never so stident as on ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ and ‘Black Dog’, two selections of undiluted brilliance. The blues standard ‘When the Levee Breaks’ is massively powerful, particularly through John Bonham’s thunderous drumming, and the group’s love of folk forms surfaces on the graceful ‘Battle of Evermore’, complete with a cameo from Fairport Convention’s Sandy Denny and the beautiful mandolins. ‘Stairway to Heaven’ has, of course, become the album’s best-known track, but the anthem-like stature it has since assumed should not obscure it’s groundbreaking companion songs. This album left much of heavy metal, and indeed rock itself, trailing in it’s wake. It charted at 1 in the UK and 2 in the US and has become an evergreen classic of huge stature and remains as popular and in-demand as when first issued. Conditions for collectors is always an issue. These monolithic masterpieces were so often played to destruction and so many fail to please when played on modern highly clinical equipment. The finer grooves on this album often meant just a tiny fine mark or light scratch sounded more freely than on earlier albums. The perilous final seconds of ‘Stairway’ often meant arms being lifted prematurely resulting in scratches on those ultra fine innermost grooves with annoying loud clicks ruining those vital last few words. Finding a copy that gives that ultimate audio satisfaction is challenging and so many crackle either with variable pressing quality or over-playing on old record players that simply tracked at vast weight. Well have no fears with this beautifully pressed and not mass-produced Japanese copy. The record plays magnificently with tremendous drive, power and sonic delivery of the music. Devoid of pressing and surface noise with no pops or clicks noted – this simply raises the neck hair and was a thrill to play-grade. The cover has always been prone to wear, this has little, but the owner put a piece of clear tape on the back top edge towards the right. There is scant evidence of any split, but possible gentle cracking possibly meant a preventative measure? So there is a gentle residue mark seen on the back too edge for around a third of the right. A much lighter trade inside the gatefold as well, but this actually hard to see. The same graphic inner sleeve is included and more unusually, a lyric sheet (in English and Japanese) and the traditional OBI strip as seen on my picture. So a lovely all-round complete example. But apart from the sublime music, most praise has to be given to the lovely record and the magnificent audio quality it offers. I can hardly imagine hearing a much cleaner and more enjoyable copy on a vinyl record.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this being very conservative, also not really taking into account of the tape residue mark. Any opinion on marks like that are purely subjective, so make up your own mind. A matt, smooth finished non-laminate gatefold format. This has no text at all and has the same artwork as the UK version, in fact it looks practically the same with slightly thicker and heavier card. Includes the unlined inner, again the same as the UK version, a lyric insert sheet and the traditional Japanese OBI strip.

Cover Front: The odd small tip rub apart, this has little to fault. Fresh, clean and attractive with barely any creasing, rubbing or marks. There are no tape marks on this front

Cover Back: Small tip rubs and a couple of tiny tip creases. The tape mark is seen on the top edge more towards the right, there is NO surface tear, so the graphic is undamaged. Any marks very faint and few and no ringwear.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Only the merest trace of the same tape mark, really do look to see this, again no graphic damage. Little else to fault bar this minor blemish.

Top Edges: Light and ultra fine crack traces near the tape, but hardly showing, a few small chips and minor rub traces. Both still look neat and straight.

Bottom Edges: A little very patchy light rubbing, no splits and again straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is closed with a real edge, this has a little rubbing near the top. The back opening is very clean and sharp with barely any traces of thickening or burring, both edges are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid and thick, straight with no compression or tilt. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely and parallel. Any chipping or rubbing bordering on minuscule with practically all the graphic as made, there is no text on this spine or anywhere on the cover at all.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing, this again seldom avoided to some degree. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very fine example of a difficult cover. All the main faces are impressive and so few will avoid a little wear to the edges and corner tips. Yes a little tape residue, but no surface pulling, tears or damage, so not for the perfectionists, but this will still please many collectors.

The OBI Strip: MINT(–): superb, untorn, split with NO repairs. This practically as made, clean and fresh and even avoiding creases. The ends still strong and unworn as well.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): again being very conservative. An unlined inner and few survive without edge splits. This one practically has: just a tiny pressure thin on the bottom, that apart, all others solid and fully intact with no repairs. This has the darker finish like the first UK examples, smooth surfaces and has the lyrics to ‘Stairway to Heaven’. Uncreased, fresh and attractive.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: EXCELLENT(+): with just a faint trace of grubbiness and the odd small, light tone spot. Barely creased and most of the edges crisp, no UK copy I know of ever included this sheet.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: clean with fine shine and quite solidly pressed. Under light, some mainly light surface marks are seen, but purely superficial. Card inners never surface friendly, but any marks have no audio affect and this record simply plays superbly. On that basis alone, this record should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This timeless classic plays plays even above it’s visual grading with practically nothing to fault – and how glad I am to be able to state that. So often I am less than impressed with even clean looking UK copies of this title. I am sure mass production did not help, crackle and surface noise is quite common and ruins the real pleasure of these lovely songs, especially the more gentle acoustic ones. This Japan pressing offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear and sound quality is very high indeed with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted, as stated further up, I wish all UK pressings sounded like this. The very best audio quality in terms of detail, dynamic range and sonic delivery, and this one failed to disappoint. The power of the band bursts from the speakers with grace and drive, it leads you directly to recording studio itself. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. A copy devoid of pressing noises or distortions, a clean and crackle-free example – NEVER take that for granted. When heard somewhere near it’s best, this is an album of immense beauty and it’s hardly any wonder most collectors want this in their collection. A special note must be made on Bonham’s drumming: this is real powerhouse stuff. Play the final song loudly and it will shake the foundations. The record may have a few light marks, but it offers exhilarating sound that will leave the senses realing – and nothing else is more important for me – my highest possible recommendation stands.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
