THE LEATHERCOATED MINDS :
A TRIP DOWN THE SUNSET STRIP

on the VIVA label (distributed by Dot) ~ V 6003 ~ First Issue ~ 1967 ~ MONO

This obscure LP features a young session man named J. J. Cale on guitar.
John J. Cale also produces & arranges the LP & composes four of the 12 tracks.

VINYL : Near Mint (NM):  Pressed on heavy, inflexible vinyl. Very black & shiny.
Little sign of wear or play. Very seldom spun. A real beauty.
 
COVER : Near Mint minus (NM-): Almost like-new. Very little ring wear on front. Spine intact & very legible, slightly creased. Seams intact and sharp. Slight corner bend at top of spine. Opening edge is sharp. A few faint tan spots on back cover near right edge. No real flaws & very well preserved, this is a true period piece from L.A. circa '66-'67.

INNER SLEEVE: Thick white paper, die cut.

LABELS : Very sharp, no marks. On the tiny, seldom-seen VIVA label (see scan)
 
BEAR SAYS : A concept LP, complete with a few "found sounds" recorded right down on The Sunset Strip. This obscure album was produced & arranged by a youthful J.J. Cale for Snuff Garrett Productions & J.J. plays some tasty guitar throughout the proceedings. The LP offers eight "cover versions" of hip 1967 tunes, plus four nifty instrumentals written by & featuring J.J. Cale . "Bred & nurtured by Hollywood" THE LEATHERCOATED MINDS "understand & feel West Coast music..." (according to some very hip liner notes.) This overlooked & under promoted record is a lot of fun & certainly deserved wider exposure. So check it out & take a Trip Down The Strip with the Minds !!

A SIMPLE VINYL GRADING SYSTEM :

Mint: Still Sealed/Unplayed/Unopened/The Holy Grail
Mint minus (M-): New and Possibly Unplayed ; a rarely used grade.
Near Mint (NM): Like-new, with little or no visible wear; very collectible, very rare.
Near Mint minus (NM-): almost like-new, perhaps very slight signs of age, play or wear that are strictly cosmetic.
Excellent (EX)/Very Good double-plus (VG++): Way above average, very nice, no serious flaws; played, not abused.
Very Good plus (VG+): An above average used LP; a few visible surface marks or paper scuffs; slight surface noise.
Very Good (VG) : An average used LP, far from perfect; a few light scratches. Some noise; plays through, no skips.
Very Good minus (VG-) : Reveals lots of wear/noise when viewed or spun but is not actually defective or warped.




LP Cover grading is a much less exact, more subjective science. Generally, the truly collectible grades range from Mint to Excellent (VG++) depending on general wear. Main cover flaws such as split seams or spine splits, ring wear, cut or bent corners, hole punches, writing, water damage etc. should always be mentioned in a proper auction listing. All records are professionally sight-graded, sometimes play-graded. Keep in mind, used LPs are very rarely found in actual "Mint" condition. Proper record grading involves skill, knowledge & honesty, not wishful thinking.
