LEAD BELLY ~ AN ICON IN AMERICAN BLUES & FOLK MUSIC
RARE RECORD ALBUM 78 RPM 1939c MUSICRAFT ALBUM 31
This album belonged to my husband's parents. They were huge record collectors of mostly classical/opera. But they were also early civil rights activists and Lead Belly's music touched their souls. They met Lead Belly at the home of Jack Kimbrough, San Diego's first black dentist. Lead Belly did a casual performance for the activists who were gathered there.
This is a 5 record album, however the 5th record is missing. The songs included are:
Album 31 223-A: 'Frankie and Albert' (First Half); 223-B: 'Looky, Looky, Yonder', 'Black Betty', 'Yallow(sic) Women's Door'
Album 31 224-A: 'Frankie and Albert' (Completion); 224-B: 'Ain't Goin' Down To The Well No Mo', 'Go Down Old Hannah'
Album 31 225-A: 'Poor Howard', 'Green Corn'; 225-B: 'Fannin Street'
Album 31 226-A: ' The Boll Weevil'; 226-B: 'De Kalb Blues'
We don't have a turntable so are unable to play the records, however, all 4 records appear to be in pretty good condition. There are some slight surface scratches on some of the records, nothing deep. The labels aren't worn and are all readable. The photos are of the front side of each record. I can email more photos or close-ups if needed.
The sleeves are all intact with no tears. The spine was bound in what appears to be brown leather and the front cover has separated. Part of the word 'Negro' has torn off but the piece is with the album and could possibly be repaired. The back cover is stained.
