VERY RARE and hard to find 1966 single by Le Grand Mellon on the Columbia label, "Baby Please Don't Go" b/w "Summertime". Hard to believe this came out way back in 1966, with such a bizarre psychedelic band name too! Well, as it turns out, Le Grand Mellon is NOT a band at all, but the NAME of a young female singer, who, according to her bio, had never sung before this single. I've never seen a photo of Miss Mellon, but it's been said she was QUITE the babe back then, which would strongly indicate how she got to release not only THIS single, but a second as well. Both singles are darn near impossible to find now, and this has got to be the better of the two, with its absolutely KILLER thrashing supper club go-go lounge exploito psych tendencies on the A-side. "Baby Please Don't Go" is a wild one, totally out of control mod 60's strobe light mania, wherein a hot babe who's tone-deaf tries to shimmy and shake and get all "hip" on your asz while some session guitarist adds the latest fuzz tones to this delightful charmer. Think Ann Margret when she was singing about how this is a nice world to visit but not to live in, and you're so close to Miss Mellon's world. Le Grand sings sexily enough, growling and purring her way through this monstrosity - sure, she's on key about as much as the girl who sings "The Greatest Love of All" every Tuesday night at the Karaoke bar down the street from you, but that's part of her CHARM, baby! And all the while, the band's just RIPPING it up behind her with THRASHING drums, some amazing DIRTY FUZZ guitar straight out of some garage teen band, and some nice early jangly Roger McGuinn style rhythm guitar. One of the BEST go-go lounge psychedelic dancers ever recorded by a hot but tone-deaf singer in the HISTORY of music! And that's no faint praise, kiddies - that's the substance of GENIUS! Oh Le Grand, where are you now? Let's IM each other and then meet down the corner for drinks - they've got open mike night every Friday, and you can sing all the oldies to me in your special, special way.
