Austin, TX, psych outfit the Lavender Hill Express formed in 1967 -- something of a local supergroup, the founding lineup teamed former Baby Cakes guitarists Layton DePenning and Leonard Arnold with erstwhile Wig bassist Jess Yaryan and drummer Rusty Wier, along with keyboardist John Schwertner, formerly of the Reasons Why. Roughly a year following its inception, the Lavender Hill Express signed with the local Sonobeat label to cut its debut single, "Visions." An elaborate production by indie label standards, the song's rich vocal harmonies were complemented by a string quartet comprised of members of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Visions was a local hit, and in March 1968 the group issued its follow-up effort, "Watch Out!" Schwertner left the Lavender Hill Express soon after to form Plymouth Rock, and with new keyboardist Gary P. Nunn the band cut "Outside My Window," which strongly hinted at the country direction its members would subsequently pursue. Indeed, the Lavender Hill Express dissolved in 1969, with DePenning and Wier later partnering with guitarist John Inmon in the progressive country trio Rusty, Layton & John, while Arnold resurfaced in Blue Steel. Most notably, Nunn and Inmon were later founding members of Jerry Jeff Walker's Lost Gonzo Band, and DePenning later backed B.W. Stevenson. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi Rusty kept in contact with Layton De Penning & Leonard Arnold as his later solo albums confirm. Interest in Rusty's early days are usually centered around the 66 / 67 period with the garage sound of The Wig. However, not so well known is his time with the Lavender Hill Express during 67 & 68. Here the garage sound was replaced with a more psychedelic sound teased out by producers Rim Kelley & Bill Josey of Sonobeat & recorded in the now famous Vulcan Gas Company. Here also was the first leanings towards what would later blossom into new cosmic cowboy scene, part Hippie, part Country Hick or "Hickies" as Steven Fromholz called them. The four 7" singles below are the total known output of the Lavender Hill Express. Rusty re-cut one of the tracks, "Silly Rhymes" on his "Black Hat Saloon" album in 1976. Despite appearances, 3 of the 4 singles are very playable indeed with great sound. The 4th however does have a fair amount of crackle (Outside My Window/Silly Rhymes). have been buying on eBay now for many years and have over a thousand positive feedbacks. There is a reason why i have opened a new account with eBay to sell rather than use my existing account. I have in the last year or so returned to my Christian belief. I want to follow what is scriptual in disposing of what, quite honestly, has been a bit of a millstone around my neck. One day i looked around at all the many thousand items that filled two rooms and came to a dawning realisation that i had no idea what 90% of all this stuff was. I mean, i could go and buy something, play it once, log it, and that was the last i ever saw of it. So, this has handed me a golden opportunity to turn around this situation into something positive. I usually find something to say about what i am selling along with a track listing for albums. I hope that my passion and love for these items shines through occasionally amongst my rambling. So why would i want to just give them away. Simple, my love for Jesus as my redeemer is even greater.
