mardi-gras MONO LP
LP 5009

Latin bandleader Al Castellanos' orchestra was actually the La Playa Sextet. “The Speak-Up Mambo" (album pictured on the back cover) was Al Castellanos’ first big hit with New York’s premier Latin music imprint, Mardi Gras. It was a precursor to his great tongue-twister (or speed vocal), “Merengue Ta-Ka-Ta”. However, the main interest in this album is the front cover with a double-cheesecake shot of two leggy Latino babes! With a cover like that, who even cares if there is a record inside! But there is...and it looks to be in pretty decent shape too. Record albums with cheesecake covers are quite collectible and often fetch high prices, especially if they're scarce, which this one is. To me, there is a difference between a cheesecake cover and a nudie cover. Cheesecake doesn't cross the line (no bare breasts or southern exposure) and true cheesecake is always vintage. I know this album came out in the late 1950's (I think it was 1958 or 1959, but I'm not sure) so it is definitely vintage. If you pass it by, somebody else definitely won't!
