“Larry Williams is one of the most dynamic and exciting performers to have emerged from America in the past few years. During his stage performance, he works his audience up into a frenzy of excitement, as can be heard on this album, which was recorded live during Larry’s recent and highly successful tour of this country. Included here are all of Larry’s biggest hits, as well as his versions of songs made famous by many of his contemporaries, which he specially asked to be included. Larry Williams is a name that has been held in awe in this country since the early days of rock ‘n’ roll. His dynamic singing and piano playing have delighted his fans all over the world via his million-selling hit records, whilst his compositions have been recorded countless times by artistes in all facets of the music business.
Larry was born in New Orleans on My 10th, 1935, and grew up digesting the musical influences of this historic city. At the age of eighteen he formed his own band, playing dates in and around the San Francisco area. In 1955 he joined the Lloyd Price band as pianist, touring America with this famous artist. Lloyd brought Larry’s talents to the attention of Art Rupe, head of Specialty Records in Hollywood. Rupe, a shrewd businessman, signed Larry to an exclusive three-year contract, and immediately recorded Larry’s version of one of Lloyds biggest tunes, ‘Just Because’. The record hurtled to the second position in the U.S. charts. At this stage Larry formed his own band once again, as demand for his personal appearances poured in from all over America. His next two records not only sold over a million each, they also became rock classics. ‘Short Fat Fannie’ and ‘Bony Maronie’ rocked listeners on both sides of the ocean during 1958. Larry continued this run with the pounding and much-imitated ‘Dizzy Miss Lizzy’.
Larry is a tremendously warm and knowledgeable person. He will talk for hours about the music business in America, always showing an inherent modesty and affection for his fellow-performers.
This album is most probably the wildest thing that has ever been put on record in this country, capturing all the magic and tension of a ‘live’ Larry Williams show. Although the difficulties involved in making this album were almost insurmountable, the effort and time have been completely justified by the result. For those of you who have never seen Larry work, this album will be a new and exciting experience. For those of you that have, it will serve as a showcase and reminder of the night that you saw Larry ………live………on stage!”
