Joining up with hard bopper Larry Nozero, singer/songwriter Sheila Landis stays pretty much on the same track as her two previous albums, viz., a platter filled with her own well-conceived bop-hued originals coupled with her highly variable techniques of delivering the material. Along the way, Landis scats, swoops, and dips and chirps (without indulging in these practices), and plays tag with the musicians, her principal protagonist being Nozero's highly charged alto. The lyrics of her songs are the product of a free-spirited, highly imaginative and innovative individual. The titles are the first indication of her nonconformist approach to songwriting. This quality carries over into her incredibly energized singing, where she leaves absolutely nothing on the studio floor. In addition to her wild swinging, Landis can also be warm, as she shows on "Ordinary Rain," with a soulful sax moaning in the background. But things don't stay calm for long. With Nozero's rough baritone recalling the R&B baritone of Leslie Johnakins, providing the soul sauce, Landis embarks on one of the wildest rides on the album with a rousing "I Want to Join Their Song." Nozero shows he deserves the co-billing he gets with the only pure instrumental on the set, "Cleans Weep." Her album matches the excitement of the first two and is recommended.
