Lanzon Husband – Nostalgia

Who are Barry Husband and Simon Lanzon? They are not lost in time, they are not obscure minstrels and they are not unknown. Barry Husband (aka Barry Younghusband) was in Tuesdays Children and also The Warm Sounds with Denver Gerrard and "Candy " John Carr who got together just in time to greet the Summer of Love with a psychedelic-pop classic called "Birds And Bees" / "Doo Dah", released on Deram Records in 1967. The song reached number 27 in the British pop charts and hit number one on Radio London, the definitive pirate radio outlet for the U.K. This proved to be the last success had by the Warm Sounds who made two other singles "Nite Is A-Comin'"/ "Smeta Murgaty" also on Deram and an Immediate records release"Sticks And Stones" / "Angeline", which also failed to sell. When the Warm Sounds split Barry Husband and John Carr moved over to Hapshash And The Coloured Coat. Barry Husband and Denny Gerrard also sang background vocals on Billy Nicholls legendary "Would You Believe" album for Immediate. Barry Husband and Simon Lanzon eventually came together when Donovan’s backing band Open Road broke up and they reformed and made one album "Windy Daze" for Greenwich records in 1971. After Open Road split up again, Lanzon and Husband, continued into the 1970’s in their "acid-folk" frame of mind, releasing the "Nostalgia" album on Bradleys records in 1974 and touring with the likes of Hawkwind amongst others. "Nostalgia" was recorded between September 1972 and October 1974. The LP is a superb mix of complex rock, psych, prog, baroque pop, folk and even some medieval sounding gregorian chants were in the mix. There isn’t a weak track on the LP but the psych prog masterpiece "Silly People" or the mysterious sitar drenched psychedelic classic "Westinster Bridge" through to the heavy rocker "Gheto" are all stand out cuts. They also cut one single, the superb "I’ll Be With You Again And Again" / "Changes", under the name of Gemini, also for Bradleys in 1974. Simon Lanzon was born in India and educated at Ampleforth Abbey, where the monks first fired his interest in music, he initially trained at drama school as an actor but after landing his first stage role understudying on the Mousetrap play, he decided a musical career may be more to his liking. He moved to Notting Hill Gate, around Portobello road, and started hanging out with a few people on the scene at the time, those people on the scene led him to meet up with fellow musicians who formed themselves into the group Open Road where he met Barry Husband. In the late 1970’s Lanzon became involved with a fledgling punk band that would become Chumbawamba, who had some success as an underground left-wing protest group in the 1980’s. Their mainstream breakthrough came with the 1997 number one hit "Tubthumping", which brought the Yorkshire politico-popsters blinking into the spotlight and led to their most notorious moment when they tipped a jug of water over John Prescott at a music awards ceremony. Lanzon continued in the music business playing with Chumbawamba and being heavily involved in musical theatre and film.
