Kula Shaker intitially came to prominence during the Britpop years, with their mix of 60s psychedelia and Indian culture. They scored a huge hit with their cover of 'Hush' and were, at one point, rivalling the likes of Blur and Oasis. Unfortunately, the band was somewhat scuppered by a "scandal" and issues relating to class. For many, Kula Shaker became something of a memory that simply summed up those days back in the 90s when Loaded and Oasis were all you really needed. The band reformed in 2005 and has continued to release solid albums that remained true to the band's original vision. Wormslayer is no different, Crispian Mills continues to imbue his songwriting with mysticism and 60s influences. The difference between now and the band's 90s heyday, is that Mills has perfected his approach. Songs like 'Little Darling' no longer sound like homages, they sound authentic. Certainly there are allusions to the likes of Dylan, Mamas And Papas, and The Beatles throughout Wormslayer, but Kula Shaker's commitment to their sound is absolute. 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' is a finely crafted pop song, complete with fine vocal harmonies. Closing track 'Dust Beneath Our Feat' is a chilled-out, hip-shaking, campfire singalong. You can practically smell the patchouli and see the tie-dye t-shirts. Wormslayer is a perfect distillation of Kula Shaker's ethos and a fine collection of classic 60s inspired rock songs.
