KINGDOM COME - POLYDOR UK 1972 ORIGINAL
***********UNDERGROUND PROG ROCK FREAKED OUT CLASSIC**************

I WENT TO SEE THEM AT COVENTRY POLY CIRCA 1971...WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!
FROM WHAT I CAN REMEMBER IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE NIGHT - UNTIL THE FIRE BRIGADE TURNED UP!!!
ARTHUR BROWN WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST SHOWMEN OF THE UK UNDERGROUND EXPLOSION.

SLEEVE - UNLAMINATED 'MACNEILL PRESS' - VG+ near EX (SOME LIGHT RUBBING)
DISC - LIGHTLY PLAYED - EX

INCREDIBLE UK 70s PROGRESSIVE / PSYCH ROCK MONSTER!!

Excellent original copy of cool UK progressive album with blistering guitar work by Andy Dalby and the incomparably powerful voice of Arthur Brown!!

Highly collectable original 1972 UK 1st pressing LP from this legendary late 60s early 70s UK psych / prog underground band. Very rare psych / prog album. Excellent UK original of this truly amazing album.

"KINGDOM COME", the second album by ARTHUR BROWN's Psych / Space Rock outfit KINGDOM COME. Issued on Polydor in 1972, the album enhanced the notoriety of the band. Touching on the musical territory of fellow travellers HAWKWIND, "Kingdom Come" is a masterwork and is now rightly regarded as a classic that deserves to be in any serious 70's prog / psych rock collection.

The "God Of Hell Fire" returns with another terrifying foreboding album full of dark progressive moods and psychedelic auras. With Arthur Brown on vocals, Andy Dalby on guitars, Michael "Goodge" Harris on organ, Phil Shutt on bass, and Martin "Slim" Steer on drums these guys were able to create an incredible and extremely 'weird' album of fearsome progressive rock incarnate, all tricky time signatures and hurtling Hammond organ. It serves to emphasise not only how this band could play but also that such flirtation with the relatively straight was no more than a passing fancy! The 2nd album by Arthur Brown and his acid infused band of Merrymen showcasing their strange prog/psych tendencies to the max ! Songs dip and doodle from the bizarre to the strange in that unique Arthur Brown style. Musically these guys were something special for sure.....Just listen to the track "The Experiment featuring the lower Colonic Irrigation" (one of the highlights of the album for me) as it offers a bit of just about everything. The album is chaulked full of surprises ...from church mass to Zappa-esque instumentation to Canterbury tales with the end results feeling something like a mild ode to Jethro Tull's "A Passion Play" masterpiece. In case anyone listens to this album for the first time I warn you that you may suffer severe brain damage! I guess you could place it somewhere in the company of a cross of good ol' VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR with maybe hints of ATOMIC ROOSTER, PINK FLOYD and touches of VANILLA FUDGE. The end result is a quirky monster prog album with some amazing warm tones and wild stuff abounding. A necessary album to own in your 70's prog / psych rock collection. But again I warn you it may blow your mind!

MIND-BLOWING BRITISH 70's UNDERGROUND PSYCHEDELIA LACED WITH DOOMY HAMMOND ORGAN, GREAT GUITAR AND 100% FULL-ON FREAK OUT LUNACY!!

Vinyl: EX

(The vinyl surfaces on this 1972 UK first pressing still retain their original full gloss and intense dark sheen showing only a few faint wispy hairlines and light surface marks seen under a strong light. The record plays extremely well delivering excellent audio throughout with great powerful sound clarity. A strong excellent condition 1st pressing of this truly mindblowing prog rock LP)

Labels: EX+

(Both labels are clean and unmarked with just a couple of very faint spindle traces)

Sleeve: VG+ near EX

(The original 'MacNEILL PRESS' 'Crescent and Star' matt finish sleeve is in a solid VG+ verging on excellent condition. The front of the sleeve does show some rubbing and slight colour loss on the gold areas around the edges which frame the sleeve (as seems to be usual with this delicate sleeve). There are a few small wrinkles, slight ringwear and tiny abrasive scuffs on the front. The seams and spine all have a little shelfwear rubbing, nothing too serious. This legendary early 70's sleeve is notoriously difficult to obtain in tip top shape since the gold areas and matt finish tend to reveal rubbing and colour-loss so easily - this copy is a solid very good plus near excellent example of this iconic psychedelic sleeve.....please see pictures provided)

1972 UK original 1st pressing of hard to find album by legendary UK early 70s psych/prog band Kingdom Come featuring the unique Arthur Brown!!

On offer here, from my own collection, is an excellent condition original UK 1st pressing of Kingdom Come's rare self-titled 2nd album, issued on the UK 1st press Polydor Records label in 1972.

Before Marilyn Manson, before Alice Cooper, there was THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN, an R&B act whose hit song "Fire" set both the UK and US charts alight back in 1968. Considered one of the prime movers behind the British progressive underground scene, Brown's flamboyant stage act - flaming helmet, outlandish costumes, bizarre facial make-up and crazy, incendiary vocals - appropriately suited the band's manic, psychedelic sound. When they broke up in early 1969, Brown pursued some obscure and less exciting venues and slowly abandoned his R&B roots. He then resurfaced in 1971 and was back to his theatrical excesses (including his own on-stage crucifixion) with a new band called ARTHUR BROWN'S KINGDOM COME; this one a rocker, more adventurous and decidedly more progressive outfit. Through the course of three albums, the band saw a string of musicians incessantly going through the revolving doors of Brown's ministry. Not having much commercial success, however, they split up in 1973. Brown went on to cut a few solo albums and then disappeared somewhere in Texas to become a carpenter!

All three ARTHUR BROWN'S KINGDOM COME albums are a kind of collision between psychedelia and new wave, bearing a space-rock and typical ZAPPA-esque tomfoolery and featured a wild mix of progressive rock and demented theatrics, including Brown's simulated crucifixion. Kingdom Come often performed in full costume with makeup, and photos of Brown from this period clearly show him sporting a distinctive eye-makeup scheme.

The word 'crazy' may well have been dropped from the band name, but the music still contained that vital ingredient. After his one and only LP with THE CRAZY WORLD OF..., this next venture followed suit, with a doomy hammond orientated sound.

Compositions are weird, hilarious and superb, in the same vein as FRANK ZAPPA or GONG maybe, fused with ATOMIC ROOSTER. So many different styles grace this LP. Many laid claim to the term progressive when the genre hit paydirt in the early '70s, noodling along nicely on the back of a truly innovative few. Brown reinvented himself enthusiastically up to his mid-career, his psychedelic Crazy World folding into stoner experimentalism with this line-up, whose second album here is peppered with a growing spiritual undertow to bouts of Bonzo-esque zaniness. This is Arthur BROWN's second album with KINGDOM COME, a self-entitled album released in 1972. Things have changed in the KINGDOM COME lineup since the release of "Galactic Zoo Dossier". Bassist Desmond Fisher, and synthesizer player Julian Paul Brown are now out of the picture, leaving BROWN, guitarist Andy Dalby, keyboardist Michael "Goodge" Harris, and drummer Martin "Slim" Steer to find a new bassist, in this case Phil Shutt.  Brown's assertion that the album maintains a thematic thread exploring the elements (it's supposed to be about water) is not particularly evident in the outcome, the wet stuff metaphorically muddied perhaps by a general untogetherness that robbed the band of overall cohesion. That said, it has some big moments to be cherry-picked from the mayhem including broody 'Love Is A Spirit That Will Never Die', hyperactively bonkers 'The Experiment' and the 8 minute plus closing track 'The Hymn' which allows the band to stretch out over a glorious mellotron chord sequence with a memorable melody line and Andy Dalby's processional guitar work topped by Brown's dramatic and individual vocals....a real highlight of the album.

A totally FREAKED OUT 'weird as hell' early 70's UK underground scene progressive psych rock album that shouldn't be overlooked......essential stuff indeed!

If you delight in both failed genius and early 70's hippy zaniness, then do give this band a listen. You'll probably find plenty of words to describe their music, but 'boring' isn't be one of them!! It's fairly intriguing in a way, like being transported to an alternate universe where nothing but weird prog-avant-rock stuff comes out of the car radio when you spin the dial. This LP should be a part of any comprehensive collection of early-70s prog rock.
