The Recording

April 6 1923, Richmond, Indiana. Nine titles were recorded in this session and generally they are regarded musically as the best of Oliver’s recorded output. Certainly they were seminal: although there had been earlier jazz records, notably from the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, their style is now dated and not emulated. The Oliver Gennetts brought the element of swing into jazz and launched a defining style that is still copied closely, still regarded as the heart and soul of classic jazz. As for Dippermouth Blues, it is the conerstone of the Oliver legend: King and Louis play side by side in their distictive two trumpet lead, and Oliver contributes his famous solo, which became part of the tune, a magnificent solo which was “borrowed” by any number of lesser trumpet players for incorporation into their efforts on other recording. Probably it is fair to describe this Oliver solo as the most famous trumpet solo in all of jazz.

Rarity

The record is scarce, but not rare. Copies may be acquired. Copies in decent condition are few and far between, however, and keenly sought after.

Condition

The condition is excellent. The surface is gleaming and the grooves are without wear. A few little marks and scratches show, but do not affect play. A conservative grading is good E. It plays very cleanly.

Condition grading  I use the internationally recognised system, as laid out below. My grading is scrupulous. I guarantee down to V+. Grades thereafter being somewhat open to debate.

• (E+) plays like new with few signs of aging, no noticeable scratches or other marks. Glossy surface, not dull
• (E) still very shiny, with no visible signs of groove wear (such as greying) but with possibly a few very minor scuffs and very light (inaudible) scratches
• (E-) still shiny but without the lustre of a new record. Possible light wear (but no audible distortion), light scratches and scuffs
• (V+) Surface is not shiny, and there may be greying of the grooves caused by needle wear, as well as scratches and scuffs, but playing is generally free of distortion. Some of the scratches may be deep enough to be audible but they will not allow the stylus to skip or jump
• (V) Record is worn and has scratches, possible "digs", and greying of the grooves. Generally, the record will distort on playing and the scratches and other damage will be audible
