Description

‘GENE GREENE just may have been the hippest white man alive in 1911.  His singing was slippery and syncopated, even more so than Al Jolson’s, and as far as anyone can tell, Greene invented Scat singing – or at least, was the first to use it on records.

Which he copiously did on the 1911 original of “THE KING OF THE BUNGALOOS” (and again in 1917). This was fifteen years before Louis Armstrong’s “Heebie Jeebies” hit people’s eardrums!  Greene obviously was in the hot speartip vanguard of rhythmical singing.  He shows more of his versatility on the flip side, “RUFF JOHNSON’S HARMONY BAND.”

This original 1917 “Bat Wing” Victor 18266 is in about E condition.

*****

These records come from my private collection, which I have been accumulating since 1967, and now am downsizing!  My highest priority in these eBay auctions is to give you the best possible idea of a record’s true condition and aesthetic value.  I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all.  If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!  Shipping is done with expert care. Your record will brave Media Mail in a stout corregated box, between four sheets of cardboard and a couple of “packers.”  I hope you are amused by these descriptions, and by the quality of service being offered.

An Unsolicited Testimonial!: "Superbatone is one of the coolest people on eBay - seriously. An excellent source for music, knowledge, and whimsy, and an asset to the community who cares about music and its preservation. It goes without saying that he is an expert in all facets surrounding 78’s and their content."
