Description
This is truly a REMARKABLE Jazz/R&B EP from 1958. Certainly one of the RARERST that RCA ever pressed & one of the BEST! (RCA EPA-4196). Titled "The Battle For The Beat" & features KING CURTIS & COUNT HASTINGS (with Leroy Kirkland's Hi-Flyers) battling it out on "Tenor Sax" Boy does it BOP! Furious Beat! Will absolutely knock you SIDEWAYS! Side 1: "Battle Royal", "Royal Tenors"; Side 2: "Night Before Battle" , "The Count And The King"..with Sir Leroy Kirkland And His Jumpin' Knights. Back liner notes: "Gather, ye knights of the round cool table, and harkin to the sound of the hi-fi battle. The swingin' King and the gone Count interlock with no decision as yet. As with knights of yore, the tournament opens with the "Battle Royal". Mounted on tenors (saxes) the knights joust the most, leaving the green rockin'...Reeling and rocking "The Count And The King" engage in a final round of mortal combat, note for note, denting their musical armor with solid blows." BIO: "KING CURTIS is one of the best rock-and-roll musicians of all time. His specialty was the tenor sax. He was in demand as a sax player by nearly every musician in the business. One of his memorable sax solos can be heard on the "Coasters' "Yakety Yak". The list of people he worked with reads like a who's who of musicians in the early days of rock-and-roll. A partial list includes "Buddy Holly", "The Drifters", "The Coasters", "Sam Cooke", "The Shirelles", "The Beatles", "Eric Clapton" and "John Lennon". The music world lost one of its top musicians when King Curtis was murdered in New York City in 1971. He was stabbed to death outside his apartment." COUNT HASTINGS was another tenor sax who played with some of the top Jazz & R&B musicians of his day. LEROY KIRKLAND (1906-1988) was an arranger whose career spanned the eras of big band jazz, R&B, rock 'n' roll & soul. He began arranging music at Savoy Records in NY & to arrange R&B artists for OKeh Records & other companies, working with such groups as the Five Satins, the Ravens and The Everly Brothers." The CONDITION of this rare ep is amazing! Almost a half-century old, yet its Nearly MINT!! Cover has a minor light crease & grades VG++ (see scans!) & VINYL is BEAUTIFUL: VG++/NM with only a light scuff!! No R&B or JAZZ collection is complete without this 1950s tour-de-force RARITY. Hope you win it! Please check my other rare jazz LPs.
