(A beautiful gleaming vinyl with deep mirror shine and only a few faint wispy hairlines seen under strong light. This LP has been mine from new! Play tested today with EXCELLENT near MINT sound quality throughout. No nasty indiscretions whatsoever. Still retains its just pressed glossy sheen and is perfectly flat with no warps. Sharp and clear sound with only occasional light audible crackle in a few quiet parts. No skips, no jumps, no sticking, no serious loud pops or any distortion to the sound. Graded a strong EX+)
SIMPLY STUNNING. THIS COPY HAS HAD VERY LITTLE PLAY IN THE 40 + YEARS I HAVE OWNED IT. PLAYS THE WAY IT LOOKS!! DIFFICULT TO FIND SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER!! A FABULOUS ORIGINAL UK 1st PRESS PINK ISLAND ORIGINAL OF THIS OUTSTANDING PROG LP.
Labels: MINT-
(Beautiful original PINK 'I' LABELS are MINT and UNMARKED with just a few almost invisible spindle trails. Full Pink format, smooth labels with large white i logo. These are a beautiful deep, rich pink colour with an almost pastel-like finish. The very best and AS CLOSE TO MINT AS POSSIBLE!!)
Gatefold Sleeve: EX++ near MINT
A Fantastic Fragile Textured Gatefold Sleeve In Magnificent Condition
(The stunning thick textured gatefold sleeve 'Printed and Made by the E.J.Day Group, London and Bedford' is in fantastic EX++ near MINT condition. This famous prog cover is almost like holding an original painting and few will get close to this – this is a true work of art on a record sleeve. To find this gatefold sleeve in such wonderful condition is almost unheard of, mainly due to the very fragile nature of the textured construction!! The cover is superbly flat and straight. The front and back have only the absolute lightest of wear, one very small, hardly noticeable light crease near the spine, and very little else of any real significance at all. The wide spine is fully intact, straight and solid, with just a couple of very tiny small scuffs near the middle. There IS a little rubbing scuff on the lower spine corner tip and a minute scuff on the top spine corner tip. All the spine text is totally legible and completely clear. The top and bottom seams have only very, very minor shelfwear rubbing, almost unheard of for this notoriously fragile textured sleeve. The inside panels of the gatefold sleeve are beautiful and virtually unmarked. There is No writing, No tears, No sticker marks. Overall a magnificent example of this 40 + years vintage fragile textured gatefold cover. This sleeve looks as good today as it did when it left the record shop in 1970! Due to the fragile nature of its textured finish very few copies still survive in condition anywhere near as good as this top copy! I very much doubt if you can EVER find a better one!!)

On offer here, from my own collection, is a SUPERB EXCELLENT + near MINT- condition original 1970 UK 1st PRESS of the classic KING CRIMSON album "IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON", issued on the UK original 1st PRESS ISLAND Records PINK 'I' label.
For me personally, this album's musical quality is at par excellent with its famous predecessor 'In The Court Of The Crimson King'. The music is dark with a combination of rock, jazz, classical influence and avant-garde. The album opens with an ethereal voice of Greg Lake in "Peace - A Beginning" that also ends the album. The voice is that soft so that when the intro of "Pictures of A City" comes into play, it created a shock impact - volume wise - as we tend to put high volume due to quiet voice of opening track "Peace - A Beginning". This second track comes suddenly with a hard driving rhythm, full of energy music, in the vein of "Schizoid Man". All music instruments, dominated by sax and guitar, form a complex musical textures but they produce excellent harmony. Lake's "almost" distorted vocal - as in the tradition of "Schizoid Man" - enters the scene energetically. Observe how powerful the drumming work of Michael Giles is on this track. Mike Giles must be one of the best rock drummers around.. The guitar effects created by Fripp create a distorted sound and drastic move from low to high register. Amazingly, this effects have even made the song much stronger in term of sounds and composition. No doubt, this track is a masterpiece!
The band brings us to quieter music with "Cadence and Cascade" in mellow style with classical influence. This time the voice is filled by Gordon Haskell. It opens with simple acoustic guitar fills followed with Lake-like vocal line. The melody of this track is so catchy and memorable - it reminds me of "I Talk To The Wind" off ITCOCK. Noticeable instruments used along with acoustic guitar and piano is flute. The flute sound played during solo and as accompanying sound of voice line is really catchy. Some vibraphone sounds are also used to accentuate end of the bars. Top notch composition!
The title track "In The Wake of Poseidon" starts with a subtle sound of mellotron accompanied with acoustic guitar. Again, the band has created a killing melody on this track. Try to observe how Greg Lake's voice enters the music right after the opening mellotron sound. Wow! It touches my heart really. The soft mellotron sound at in the background with dominant acoustic guitar and powerful drumming have made this track so great. This reminds me of "Epitaph" also from 'In The Court..' It's not the same. But, the musical nuances created by both of them share a similar soul (of Crimson's music). Another great composition by the band.
"Peace - A Theme" demonstrates an acoustic guitar work that provides a solid laying ground for the next hard driving rhythm track "Cat Food". Composed in a strange manner, this track projects a perfect marriage between rock and jazz but not in the vein of typical fusion music. Lake delivers his voice with power accompanied with improvised guitar work and unique piano sound. The bass line is also dynamic and characterize the soul of this track. The music is very original. "The Devil's Triangle" is a relatively long instrumental piece that is suitable for film scoring. The mellotron is used in a subtle way combined with piano and sax in an avant- garde style.
After the astonishing groundbreaking magnificence of their debut album, how could this ever be followed up? – well the answer, they thought, was to issue another similar album again. This album was not given the same adulation as the first by the critics of the day, that labelled it as another ‘In the Court of’. Sure I can see the similarities especially on side one – the formula of a loud first track, quieter second and epic third that follow the same format, but all the songs are treasures in their own right. Side two does vary more: after the somewhat bizarre ‘Cat Food’, that features brilliant piano work by Keith Tippet, it becomes awesomely powerful and compelling, as ‘The Devil’s Triangle’ instrumental builds with ferocious intensity with heavy use of the magnificent Mellotron. This incredible keyboard instrument is blasted to it’s limits by Fripp with an intensity that was probably never matched. Unfairly underrated in my opinion, ‘Poseidon’ is simply another Crimson classic. Beautifully packaged too (apart from maybe the use of silver ink inside that is always hard to see properly). It’s one of the deepest textured covers ever, the front and back almost resemble oil on canvas and hence this is one of the most wear prone rock covers ever made. Any friction to the front and back will literally strip off the ink from the very raised surfaces and this will rarely ever be found anything like perfect. Many, if not most are highly ‘speckled’ that ruin the appearance. This one has survived the 40+ years and it's in remarkable condition. That’s clearly great news, but even better still is the record which is simply excellent and plays beautifully. This Polydor-pressed Pink Island label original 1st PRESS early copy offers the most fabulous sound you could wish to hear. Even those incredibly fragile opening and closing vocals parts by Lake are virtually noise-free and those massive dynamics clear, focused and precise. It hardly gets better than this on a highly complex and intense record like this. This record is barely run-in in vinyl terms and offers excellent sound throughout.
I love King Crimson, they could little wrong for me right up to Red which I regard as their final masterpiece – although the later albums are interesting, the early-era Island albums are all essential and King Crimson remain the premier league real progressive band for me. Along with Van der Graaf Generator and early Genesis, their albums on vinyl are very hard to find in a fit state to really enjoy, so many being ruined by intolerable amounts of surface sound (or worse). From my own collection I am delighted to offer you this 100% original 1st PRESS PINK ISLAND copy of the groups wonderful 2nd album. Any progressive or pink Island collector will enjoy this one, the sound and mix on the early pressings are vastly superior to the latter, thinner pressings that followed and all fine details that remain masked or hidden on later pressings are all right here on these deep warm grooves.
"In The Wake Of Poseidon" remains to this day a masterpiece and is an essential piece of seventies prog rock. Truly great stuff indeed!!
