Description

PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question.   OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week.   Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback.   We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery.   We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! This is a very rare, mint clean, 50 years old Swedish Sonet label 1967 FIRST PRINTING collectible of the incredible FREAKBEAT Lp by the Belfast Gypsies, who explode with the power of Van Morrison's THEM ...

In late August 1965, Billy Harrison and Pat McAuley formed a rival "Them", competing with the Van Morrison/ Alan Henderson line-up of "THEM." In March 1966, after a court injunction, Pat McAuley and brother Jackie McAuley (both previous Them members), were only allowed to use 'Other Them' in the U.K. but instead The McAuley brothers became "The Belfast Gypsies" though they were never actually billed as such, and recorded two singles and this one Swedish-only album in 1967, all produced, directed by Kim Fowley (who no doubt sings on this album as well). These cats toured Europe billed as "Them" anyway, but ended up breaking up in November 1966. Nevertheless, when they teamed up with Mr.Fowley it was pretty cool arrangement as he's something of "Garage Guru" and Hollywood '60s scene-ster. The Belfast Gypsies turn-on a wyld Garage R&B sound all tooo similar to Morrison's Them...and crossing the boundries into FREAKBEAT...

The Lp's first track isn't bashful about its heritage, igniting a serious rave-up re-write of Gloria entitled "Gloria's Dream." Kim Fowley brought to this band an American influence, shaped by garage punk bands such as the Count Five and the Seeds, with whom Fowley had been distantly involved. So the influence is evident in "Secret Police", a Kim Fowley song with sneering nasal vocals that gives Van Morrison quite a run for his own vocal style. Kim Fowley is also all over one of the albums standouts: "People, Let's Freak Out", a thumping Bo Diddley-esque shaker of the best kind. The album cover rather mischievously had the word "Them" written large across the top of the sleeve, and "Belfast Gypsies" next, so that many buyers and indeed critics assumed it was a record by Them called Belfast Gypsies.

Hey Gyp (Dig The Slowness), follows the Them blueprint of style and sound, where elsewhere "The Last Will And Testament" is a steal from "Saint James Infirmary" performed as a pastiche of Them's glorious "I'm Gonna Dress In Black". That and also "Midnight Train" and "Boom Boom" are crafted with explosive power, again no doubt thanks to Kim Fowley who directed the band in the electrified ways of turning it on...
