Summary: The independent record label Kill Rock Stars was founded by Slim Moon and Tinúviel Sampson in the spring of ’91 in downtown Olympia. Mainly focusing on Olympia’s underground bands including wordcore (spoken word) artists. By the beginning of summer KRS released three 45rpm 7" vinyl singles with color picture sleeves. On August 1 the label expanded their catalog by releasing this limited edition full length 12" 33 1/3rpm vinyl signed and numbered in pencil. The various artist compilation first pressing was a limited edition of 1,000 hand numbered copies in pencil, this is number 81. And lightly seen embedded on the front cover located vertically in the middle right side margin upward is the number and signing by designer Tinúviel. The record itself can be identified by the absence of catalogue number (201.) Seen hand etched in the deadwax symbol is the number 201. It is the number assigned to subsequent pressings of this first pressing 12" vinyl album. The Kill Rock Stars LP was hand delivered to Positively with out a shrink. The flip side of the gold & black silk-screened Capital (Olympia) city dome record jacket designed by Tinúviel is blank (photo.) Reissues have a back cover designed by Justin Johnson with photos and text.

If the song Don’t Mix The Colors sounds familiar to you and you lived in Olympia in ‘84 there’s a possibility you heard it by the Olympia band Beat Happening. Its the last track on the B-side of their K- cassette tape entitled 3-Tea Breakfast. Now on Kill Rock Stars you are listening to Don’t Mix The Colors by the Courtney Love Band. Keep in mind its the same song but not Courtney Love that you are hearing. This is not Courtney Love (Hole) or actress that was married to Kurt Cobain performing. It is Lois Maffeo & Pat Malley recording under their stage name Courtney Love in downtown Olympia. So don’t purchase this collectible thinking you are expecting to add this LP to your Courtney Love  collection. Also Cobain recorded and lived in Olympia before moving to Seattle. Nirvana was a no-show at the convention. Since Nirvana was on tour this is an earlier recording of Beeswax. All of the bands were recorded live at the Capitol Theater or are from Olympia. Many of us in Oly are on Heather Rose Dominic’s 2000 Documentary (filmed in Olympia) The Shield Around The K: The Story Of K Records (Calvin Johnson & Beat Happening) the film is also available to buy on eBay & stream on youtube.) The Kill Rock Stars LP #201 was officially released on the last day of the International Pop Underground Convention on August 25, 1991.
