Former Yardbirds and Renaissance lead singer Keith Relf was truly one of the unsung heroes of rock and roll. Not only did Relf possess a highly distinctive and original voice (despite the rubbish said about him by ultra-square rock critics) the guy was a body double with Brian Jones and a truly compelling front man, oh how I wish he stayed as the lead singer of Led Zep then I would have actually liked them, personally I could never stomach Robert Plant's voice.

But back to the subject of Mr. Howlin' Relf, Keith managed to squeek out a couple of solo 45's during the Yardbirds heyday, "Shapes In My Mind" is a most pleasing disc that is a bit of a departure from the Yardbirds bluesy sound. "Shapes" is in fact a dead ringer for Procol Harum circa-"Shine On Brightly" and a song of immense commercial appeal.

The flipside "Blue Sands" is low key blues instrumental that recalls Lovin' Spoonful numbers like "Night Owl Blues".

None of Relf's solo singles sold well so they are quite rare these days but are worth tracking down. Keith resurfaced down the road in the late 60's after the Yardbirds split with some excellent records with the original lineup of Renaissance, and made a hard hitting album in the mid-70's with Armageddon. Sadly Keith Relf died in 1976 after receiving a fatal electric shock in his home, A tragic end to one of the all time COOL CATS.

·       CONDITION:

·       45-RPM SINGLE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted below, ALL records are graded visually, NOT play-graded!)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            White Promo Label-only same-sided version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 40:1.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       PICTURE SLEEVE

THE SLEEVE IS ABOUT VG+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Sleeve  has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams and across both sides, front and back (nothing significant)

-         Sleeve has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Minor writing noted on the picture sleeve ON ONE SIDE ONLY (please see the attached images)

-         Sleeve has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape) (visible on both sides)

-        Sleeve has 2 rectangular, sticker residue stains (small yellowish discoloration from the removed price sticker)

-         Sleeve shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker.  (less than 1/2 square inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE SLEEVE:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
