TECHNICAL DATA ON JAM SESSION

This unprecedented recording was taped on an Ampex 300 in Havana and after 36 hours of editing was assembled into proper sequence in New York.

The new duplicate master tape was then transferred to a lacquer metal disc from a Rangertone Synchronous Recorder through a Grampian BBC

Feed Back Cutter Head system using the Computer Controlled Automatic Variable pitch to permit fully uncompressed volume range despite the extended playing time and the heavy bass content of the program material. The equipment used is held to a tolerance of plus or minus one db from 30,000 cys. to 15,000 cys. It was recorded with the R.I.A.A. characteristics requiring a bass boost of 13.1 dos. at 100 cycles and a treble roll of 13.7 dbs. at 10.000 cycles.

Recording dates for standard commercial use very seldom reflect the true inspiration of the playing musicians. No matter how talented or inspired they may be, they must follow the direction of many other people, many of whom consider music only as a merchandising item and therefore put the emphasis on the taste and desire of the buying public.

When you consider the musician, the real artist behind the wax that is sold over the counter the first element to note is that they want complete independence from a time limit number. They want to play and interpret as they feel the music. This is the basis for a jam session, or better yet an impromptu showing of artistry.

When we told Julio Gutierrez that he would be given all the necessary time to go through a number of interpretations of the various basic Latin rhythms the response was immediate and overwhelming.

We opened the studio doors at 10:30 P.M. and recorded about six hours of uninhibited, unhindered and unheard of before music. Using the various elements of Julio's orchestra, the doors were open to all the talent in Havana that wanted to come by and participate. The constant flow of talent did not stop until about six hours later. The results have been edited only to the point of eliminating footage which would be discordant to the general flow of full renditions of those numbers which were improvised. It is without reservation of any kind the Panart assures you that that which you are about to hear will be a novel and unusual record. We expect that the buyer will find in it ali the color and excitement of authentic Cuban music not limited to the time of the standard recording date, but music as it is felt by the men who know how to play - and set the pace for all others who wish to imitate the various Latin sounds and rhythms.
