Product Description

ARTIST: Jorge Reyes TITLE: Pocito 11 LABEL: Areito SLEEVE: EX(-) VINYL: EX(-)

COMMENTS:Clocking in under thirty minutes Pocito 11 goes all over the range musically but the title track is arguably the nastiest funk track ever recorded in Cuba. The bass line will just grab you by the ears and invade your skull and spit it back out. Outrageous that Reyes didn't continue on this road but there are smackings of Latin funk throughout. Includes the participation of Arturo Sandoval and Hilario Duran.

Not easily found even in Cuba this vinyl LP is quickly getting the attention of music fans and collectors everywhere.

Cuban funk simply doesn't get better than this!!

"Jorge Reyes (b. 10-29-51) began his career as a bassist with Pio Leyva’s Montuneros.
After studying contrabass under Orlando ‘Cachaito’ Lopez at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory in Havana, he played successively with Orquesta RiversideOrquesta de Radio y Televisión Cubana and Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna.
In 1981, he joined Arturo Sandoval, with whom he remained for over a period of nine years, touring all over the world.
In 1983 he recorded his solo album ‘Pocito 11, with among others Omara Portuondo.
In 1990, together with pianist Hilario Duran and guitarist Jorge Chicoy, he founded Perspectiva.
Since 1996, Jorge Reyes has been and is presently with Chucho Valdés’ Irakere.
In 1997, he participated in Roy Hargrove’s Cuban project: Crisol. The CD: Havana won the 1998 Grammy Award in the Latin Jazz category.
Jorge Reyes has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Carmen Mc Rae, Max Roach, Paquito D’Rivera, Emiliano Salvador, Pablo Milanes, Rey Guerra, José Maria Vitier. In fact, in Cuba, there is hardly any that he hasn’t played with.
In the seventies, Jorge Reyes was involved in the production of the Dizzy Gillespie documentary film ‘A Night In Havana’.
In the ensuing years, there were regular meetings with Dizzy Gillespie during which Dizzy’s admiration and friendship with Chano Pozo (who died in 1948), were often the subject of their conversations.
Inspired by Dizzy’s enthusiasm, Jorge began collecting information about and compositions of the legendary conga-player.
The quantity and the quality of the compositions surpassed his expectations many times over.
Some of Chano Pozo’s compositions have become legendary: ‘Manteca’ composed together with Dizzy Gillespie and ‘Tin Tin Deo’, collaborating with Walter Fuller.
In the course of time, other Chano Pozo compositions became part of the repertoire of Latin bands, among others, ‘Rumba Con Swing’ and ‘Porque Tu Sufres’.
At the close of 1998, in a recording studio in Havana, just a few weeks prior to the fiftieth anniversary of the unfortunate death of this vibrant Cuban percussionist, Jorge Reyes was applying the final touches to the recording of his tribute to Chano Pozo.
The CD was nominated in two categories for the Premio Cubadisco 1999.
In september 2000 Jorge Reyes’ tributo a Chano Pozo performed in Bogota, Coombia. Spring 2001 they performed at the Barbados Jazz festival
Jorge Reyes’ tributo a Chano Pozo is an All Star band, with Panga on conga’s, Changuito on timbales, Pan con salsa on piano, Julio Padron on trumpet, Sopilon: violin, German Velasco: flute and saxophone and Ismael Borges maracas, güiro and lead vocals."

No Cuban records are graded Mint or Near Mint. Most Cuban records after 1970, mainly on Areito, have some degree of ring wear due to their paper like sleeves. GRADING:

All records are strictly graded. Sleeves are graded first followed by the vinyl. Example: EX/VG. I have used both the Record Collector  and Goldmine magazines standards to grade my records. Where indicated records are play graded (especially those of higher value) otherwise they are inspected under a strong light.

Pre-revolution labels like Panart, Puchito,Seeco, Duarte,Velvet Records and others from the 1950's as well as the post-revolution 1960's EGREM records were pressed using thick vinyl and generally will sound better than the 1970's and later Areito recordings. The pre-revolution records will often play better than they look.

M= Mint: refers to a brand new unplayed vinyl record.

NM = Near Mint: Record played only a few times with care. May have a few light marks when examined under a bright light otherwise appears new.

EX = Excellent: The record has some signs of being played but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging may have slight wear and/or small creasing. EX(-) is somewhere between VG and EX. A record with an EX(+) grade can be described as better than EX but not quite Near Mint.

VG = Very Good. The record has obviously been played many times but displays no major deterioration in sound quality despite noticeable surface marks and light scratches. Normal wear on the cover or extra items without any major defects is acceptable. VG(-) signifies a record has more surface noise as well as visual marking than a VG while VG(+) is not quite in the EX category.

GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated and a lot of surface noise can be heard. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, ring wear, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

FAIR: The record is only just playable and has not been taken care of. There is considerable surface that impacts on the playback, The record may jump or skip. The cover and contents will be torn, stained, water damaged and/or defaced.

Poor: The record will not play properly and skip and/or jump throughout many tracks. The cover will be badly damaged and/or partly mussing.

Bad: The record is unplayable and may be broken. This type of record is used only as a collection filler and I will only sell such a record if it is extremely rare to obtain.
