Description

Here is an extremely rare original Monarch test pressing of Clouds with a different matrix from the one that was ultimately released on Reprise. According to the photographer Joel Bernstein (who did the covers of For the Roses and Hejira) only three or four copies were pressed for Joni Mitchell herself, her producer and engineer:


Joni, Paul Rothschild and Henry Lewy recorded this album at A&M Studios in Hollywood, and before turning the master tape in, they had A&M order a test pressing from Monarch Record manufacturing so they could hear it on vinyl.  This extremely rare test pressing has “A&M Special” etched into the runoff grooves and predates any Reprise test pressing.


Only one other copy has surfaced online (Joni's personal copy). This one is in VG condition and priced accordingly. It plays through nicely with some crackle and pop, particularly at the start of each side. The A side matrix reads as follows: A&M SPECIAL Side 1 (MR) ?13224. The B-side matrix reads: A&M SPECIAL  Side 2 (MR)  ?13224-X.”
