Description
Artist & Title: Jon Lord – Sarabande
Very rare 1976 UK FIRST PRESSING 8-track vinyl LP, recorded with The Philharmonia Hungarica conducted by Eberhard Schoener, housed in the original MINT die-cut picture sleeve complete with the original MINT shaped corner picture inner sleeve, which can be inserted either way round to reveal a star field or a picture of Jon Lord. The record is in VG+ condition and the sleeve and inner sleeve are both in MINT condition and the LP sounds as wonderful as ever despite some light, superficial, scratches on side two that are barely audible and have been there since I bought it new. That is the only reason this LP is not graded MINT - I had not even noticed the marks before today but I like to be as accurate as possible. A superb copy of this unique Symphonic Rock album!
Highly desirable for its A-1/B-1 first pressing matrices and Very Good Plus condition, and increasingly difficult to find in even fair condition, this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to add this superb rarity to your collection at an extremely advantageous price.

“What the album features is nothing less than a modern-day classical masterpiece”
This is the extremely rare real thing: a genuine VG+/Mint condition UK first pressing. The record, sleeve and inner are all in excellent condition without any major defects like tears, creases, stickers, writing, dog ears, stains or the like. This album genuinely looks like it was bought new today. See pics. All items are the genuine originals bought together by me in 1976 not reprints or replacements. The LP is the original UK 1976 stereo LP, which was only played occasionally on top-end audiophile equipment and lovingly cared for.
“This unique musical bonbon is so perfect the listener has the feeling there is not a single note that could be added or left out.”
THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF THIS ESSENTIAL SYMPHONIC ROCK ALBUM EVER OFFERED FOR SALE IN RECENT TIMES
Sarabande is the second solo album by Jon Lord recorded near Düsseldorf (Germany). The orchestra was conducted by Eberhard Schoener.
Sarabande is considered one of Lord's best solo works.
Lord was quoted: "the compositions were good, the musicians were outstanding and the conductor understood the music. Everything came together and I have to say, nothing I made before or since comes close to Sarabande."
The complete Sarabande suite was premiered in live performance in Budapest on 18 September 2010 and later in Sofia on (30 October) and Essen (15 November). Lord amended the 1975 orchestrations, and also orchestrated Aria, which was played on piano and synthesizers on the recording, and Caprice which was simply a group performance on record. 'Finale' was made-over to allow the ‘parade of themes’ section -which was done with tape-loops on the recording- to be played live.
The cover shows the drawing of an ourobouros (a snake biting its own tail), on which three naked women ride. The woman at 120° (clockwise) from the top stands in a position evocative of the woman on Whitesnake's Lovehunter cover. The original Jon Lord sleeve was designed by Kosh, and the illustration by Mike Bryan.
This may be your only ONCE IN A LIFETIME chance to own this rare piece of rock history in this condition.
“Why is this album not in everyone's collection?”
Whatever you want to say about Jon Lord’s discography, there can be little argument that this particular album is pure symphonic rock. On the symphonic side is the Philharmonica Hungarica Orchestra, conducted by Eberhard Schoener. On the rock side are Lord, Police guitarist Andy Summers, and Spencer Davis Group drummer Pete York. And just to spice things up, former Elf drummer and world-music percussionist Mark Nauseef adds his appreciable talents as well.
This is an all instrumental album, and frankly I can’t imagine any vocalist could have added anything to it anyway. Apparently a sarabande is a triple metre slow dance that originated somewhere in Latin America, and was later adopted as a movement in Baroque-era suites. In those days the slow tempo and suggestive metre was considered somewhat obscene. And no, I did not know this – I looked it up, so if that’s incorrect please disregard. Another big surprise (not!), Debussy and Monteverdi were both fond of this musical style and incorporated it into their music a hundred years or so later. Now I’m not a musician, or even an expert on music history, but I do believe that there is a connection between this suggestive style of dance music in Baroque suites, and the contradanza in Ravel’s ‘Boléro’, also from the Baroque era. That was also considered a suggestive and obscene ballet score. And the slow, building ¾ dance timbre that builds to a maddening crescendo in that work has been repeated ad nauseum in modern progressive and post-rock by bands like Jefferson Airplane, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and even ELP. So I guess this work has some historical significance.
A fantastic time warp example of this rarity in amazing condition, a true investment grade item - get it while you can!
