Andre Jolivet: Concerto for Ondes Martenot and Orchestra (1955); Concerto for Harp and Chamber Orchestra (1955)
Westminster Vega XWN 18360 USA 195? LP Vinyl: vg+ (2 tiny pressing defect bubbles but otherwise perfect surfaces, looks barely if ever played)
Cover: ex- (few faint stains on front) Scarce first US issue of these recordings of Jolivet conducting his own works, the highlight of which is the avant garde Ondes Martenot Concerto. The Martenot (depicted beautifully on the cover) is an early electronic keyboard instrument with glissando and vibrato controls and a unique ethereal sonority and reverberation; it was invented in 1928 by Maurice Martenot with a design partly based on the Theremin. Here the Martenot is played by Ginette Martenot, sister of Maurice; its sound stays well in front and is not at all smothered by the orchestra. Lily Laskine plays harp in the other Concerto. Jolivet conducts the Orchestre du Theatre National de l'Opera.
Jolivet studied with Paul Le Flem, was influenced by Edgard Varese, and worked with Olivier Messiaen, Daniel Lesur, and Yves Baudrier. Other composers who have experimented with the Ondes Martenot are Olivier Messiaen, Giacinto Scelsi, Edgard Varese, Jacques Ibert, John Donald Robb, Rod McKuen, Karel Goeyvaerts, Toru Takemitsu, Jacques Bondon, Micheline Coulombe Saint-Marcoux, Arthur Honegger, Charles Koechlin, Claude Vivier, Darius Milhaud, Marcel Landowski, Pierre Boulez, and Frank Zappa. This lp should be heard by anyone interested in early electronic instruments and performers like Oskar Sala and his trautonium, John Eaton and the Syn-Ket, Robert Moog, Donald Buchla/Morton Subotnick, Clara Rockmore, Miklos Rosza, the Ondioline, Raymond Scott, Bruce Haack, the Arp, Pierre Henry, Pierre Schaeffer, Jean-Jacques Perrey, Gershon Kingsley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, John Cage, Henry Cowell, Hugh Le Caine, Percy Grainger, etc. Check out my other auctions this week for more Jolivet, avant garde/experimental, early electronic/electroacoustic, free jazz/improv, 20th century classical, microtonal, audiophile, prog/psych, modern poetry, and artist records.
