Hot on the heels of the recent sale of 'Midsummer Night's Scene' on ebay, here's a rare chance to own what is by far the rarest of the legitimately released British John's Children singles.
'The Love I Thought I'd Found' / 'Strange Affair' was released as their debut 45 and it hit the shops in 1966, and has questionable claim to being one of the first UK psychedelic 45s.
Most of you reading this will be familiar with the excellance of the A side and the gloriously barmy coupling, consequently it's way out qualities were too much for the record buying public in Britain and it sold poorly.
Aside from 'Midsummer' it's always been the most elusive of their standard 45s, and in the main, stock copies are as difficult to find as demos, but even rarer are the very few demos that were sent out to DJs with promo picture sleeves!!! Very few of these have ever turned up for sale, and I think it's safe to assume that not all demos were housed in them.
As you can see from the scan the sleeve portrays a familiar picture of the pre Bolan line up of Hewlett, Ellison, Townson and McClelland (on both sides), and a bonus of this particular copy is that is was signed by Chris Townson and Andy Ellison in the late 1990's at one of their early reunion gigs in London.
For collectors of UK psych 45s, this is an important record, not only as enlarged upon earlier, it's one of the earliest discs in it's genre (though John's Children are in a genre of their own!), but it's one of that attractive and legendary clutch of British 60s demo 45s issued in promo picture sleeves (Pink Floyd, T.Rex, Tales of Justine immediately spring to mind), that are keenly sought after, extremely scarce and bookmark a collection beautifully.
The condition of the record itself is superb and I would grade the A side as EX with just a very few light marks, and there are no scratches, hisses or jumps etc - infact it must have only been played a couple of times! The B Side has a few more light marks and I would grade this as VG+.
The front of the sleeve has some creasing and there are a couple of tears to the top edge, three in total, the largest measuring 0.25". The bottom edge of the sleeve has a 3.25" split. The back of the sleeve again has a few small tears, the largest measuring 1".
