Description

Johnny Shines (1915-1992) had toured the juke joints and played on the radio with the great Robert Johnson. He recorded in the late 1940s and early '50s without success, perhaps too country for the R&B market. He was out of music for a decade, then was one of the original Delta blues giants rediscovered in the 1960s. Tracks in Vanguard's Blues Today series were followed by the classic Last Nights Dream on Blues Horizon in 1968, with Walter Horton, Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James; Otis Spann on one track: with his strong, clear tenor, excellent bottleneck guitar, original compositions and thrilling re-creations of Johnson's songs, he was as good as the best, as if he'd never been away. His solo Sitting On Top Of The World c.1972 on Biograph was another classic, including Johnson's 'Dynaflow' and a remake of his own 'Ramblin' Blues' from '51, itself based on Johnson's 'Walkin' Blues'. Country Blues '74 on Transatlantic/Xtra was made in Canada with harmonica, second guitar and bass. Condition of sleeves and records is very good. I pay shipping via media mail.
