Pressed in very limited numbers and issued to promote the release of Whatever Gets You Thru’ The Night, which features on the B Side.
EMI Records Director of Repertoire & Marketing Bob Mercer interviews John Lennon in 1974. The single includes a special message to the sales force, which was intended as a motivational tool to encourage them to sell the single.
This promo was rated as the #43 rarest record in the world by Record Collector magazine in their December 2010 issue. The 2010 edition of said magazine’s Rare Record Price Guide values a mint copy at £2000.
The interview was subsequently included as one of several bonus tracks on the expanded 2005 CD reissue of John ‘s Walls and Bridges album.
Excerpt from the interview:
Bob: John, we know that you’re stuck here [in USA] until your Green Card application is successfully completed, therefore you can’t be in England. Would you like to give any message to the guys who are going to get this record?
John: Yeh, I’d like to say hi to all of you. If I was there I would come and see you. The message is, you know, if you like it sell it, if you don’t try and sell it anyway cos we’re all in the same business. I hope you like the single. You can take your girls out and dance; get your rocks off with it. If you take them home you can play them the album. And do your best and I’ll see you as soon as I can.
Bob Mercer died on 5 May 2010. He was a much-liked and highly respected executive in the record industry; while working for EMI in the 1970s he oversaw the signing of artists such as The Sex Pistols, Queen, Kate Bush and Marc Bolan.
